Let me start off and say that I will read anything this author publishes. This was better than her first novel. It was a bit technical at times, but describing an underwater rescue is going to be technical, and the technical details were necessary to understanding how complex the rescue was. There are parts of this story that will rip your heart out. The writing is just so good.

My favorite quote: "Time is luck. You grab it. You hold on tight. And you be there. You have to be there for it. It's going, with or without you. And no one knows for how long. No one knows."

I read this book in one go, in less than five hours, it definitely kept me reading. Of the characters, most managed to get a personality beyond one-note and interesting. Why is there always an Andy? I mean, I get why but...sigh, the Andys of the world are so tiresome. The main thing I disliked was something that happens at the very end which left me a bit confused. Alas, that falls under spoilers, sweetie.

I just finished reading Drowning by T.J. Newman, and overall, it was a pretty intense ride. The book's fast pace and short chapters kept me hooked and turning the pages quickly. There's definitely no shortage of thrills, which I appreciated.

That said, there were a few things that didn't quite work for me. The writing style, for one, felt choppy with a lot of broken sentences. This disrupted the flow and made it hard for me to fully immerse myself in the scenes. I also found the descriptions lacking; it was tough to visualize the settings and get a real feel for the atmosphere. The scene setting and character building were quite average, which made it difficult to connect deeply with the characters.

Despite these issues, "Drowning" was still an engaging read. If you're looking for a fast-paced thriller and can overlook some of the writing flaws, you might enjoy it. It’s hit or miss. You could pass! There are better thrillers out there.

This book starts out at full volume, edge of your seat suspenseful action with the very first sentence! TJ Newman has written another great book!
Throughout the book, there is almost nonstop action! I had to take a break because of the intensity of the action at times. The end is a strong finish that I didn’t expect.
I just read that this is being made into a movie and I cannot wait to see it!

Drowning follows Flight 1421 as it crashes into the Pacific Ocean and sinks 200 feet below the surface six minutes after the flight takes off. Of the 99 passengers on board, only 12 survive—including engineer Will and his 11-year-old daughter, Shannon. A rescue team (which includes Shannon’s mother and Will’s ex-wife, Chris) must figure out how to save the passengers before they run out of air or fall off an undersea cliff.

I liked that you were placed right into the middle of the chaos as the book begins. BUT after the first 10-15 chapters the story starts to drag. And I understand that the author was a former flight attendant, but the technical jargon did not help me understand what was going on. Unless you have an interest in or  some knowledge of airplanes, you’re going to be confused.

A lot of the characters were just insufferable. I honestly didn’t care about Will and Chris’ relationship at all. The book would have been just fine without the romance subplot because, in my opinion, it didn’t add anything to the story.  And I hated the way Jasmine’s character was written! It gave stereotypical black girl—the over-the-top mannerisms, the long braids, praying to baby Jesus, and she can’t swim? It just gave me the ick.

Overall, I can definitely see this as a movie or a plot for a network television show, but this does not work well as a book.
