Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421 by T.J. Newman was one of those perfect summer reads you pick up and can’t put down until you finish it a few hours later. It’s not the kind of book that stays with you long after the last page, but while I was sipping coffee on vacation, it was thoroughly entertaining. The story is basically an action movie in book form. Shortly after taking off from Honolulu, Flight 1421 loses an engine to fire, and all systems go down. The only option is to ditch in the ocean between Molokai and Lanai. On board is Will, an oil rig engineer traveling with his 11-year-old daughter Shannon. After the water landing, things take a terrifying turn when jet fuel ignites, forcing twelve passengers and crew to seal themselves inside the sinking plane, trapped with only a finite air supply. The question is simple but terrifying: can they be rescued in time?
The tension in this novel is relentless, and the pacing is so fast that I literally couldn’t put it down. The characters feel real and relatable, each with their own struggles and moments of hope, which makes you genuinely root for their survival. Sure, the plot leans on some pretty convenient coincidences, but that never really pulled me out of the story. For what it is, a fast-paced, gripping thriller about survival. Drowning hits the mark perfectly. It’s a great choice if you want a suspenseful, page-turning ride without having to think too hard.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was unlike anything I’ve read before—in a good way! Drowning is a high-intensity, edge-of-your-seat thriller that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. The premise is terrifying: a commercial flight crashes into the Pacific just minutes after takeoff, and a dozen passengers—including an engineer and his young daughter—are trapped inside the plane as it sinks to the ocean floor.
The tension is relentless. One minute you’re holding your breath with the characters underwater, the next you’re feeling the emotional strain of a fractured family trying to work together in an unimaginable crisis. The story alternates between the passengers fighting to survive below and the desperate rescue effort above, led by the girl’s mother and the father’s estranged wife.
T.J. Newman clearly draws on her experience as a flight attendant, and it shows. The realism, the panic, the humanity—it all feels so visceral and real. This is more than just a survival story; it’s about love, redemption, and the will to fight against impossible odds.
It’s intense, emotional, and cinematic—perfect for fans of fast-paced disaster thrillers with real heart. I couldn’t stop turning the pages, even when my nerves were frayed. That said, if you have a fear of flying or open water… you’ve been warned!

Holy crap, you cannot put this down!! Incredible story. Any fearful flyers, do NOT read
I didn't look at any reviews before reading this book and to be honest, it was a random one I had grabbed from the library so I wasn't expecting too much!
Holy moly, this book kept me hooked from beginning to end! There aren't many books I've read in just a day, but this was one of those.
