4.5-- This accelerates the pace of the first book and continues an engaging story with necessary history. It's an amazing first-person account of the movement, with a clear explanation of the philosophy and discipline involved, and the illustrations are beautiful.

Read this, read this, read this. Yes- it will break your heart. Yes- you will weep. Yes- it hurts. But you must. You must hear, you must see, you must remember. Pull yourself out of revisionist history- a history that glazes over the horrors of our past. And immerse yourself in it. Know what hatred looks like so that you can recognize it and cure it, in others and in yourself.

I want all of American history to be given to me in graphic novel form.

Graphic novel telling the story of John Lewis and his involvement with the Freedom Writers. It is occasionally interspersed with flashes to Barack Obama and his presidency. (To me, this seemed a bit jarring just because I had to get my brain in a different place each time those segments occurred, but they were interesting and relevant to the story and the message.)
Might need a little scaffolding for readers not familiar with the time period and its history, but an important story that kids should know about.

This is the second book in the graphic novel series about the life of John Lewis and the Civil Rights Movement. This one picks up where the first book left off. It focuses on the Freedom Riders through the March on Washington. Like the last book, I felt like I learned a lot about the movement and the people that sacrificed for change. It really showed how the freedom riders and others protesting were real people, not just mentions in a history book. Again it has made me want to seek out more information about the movement and its leaders beyond Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. I will definitely be picking up the third and final volume next.

Just as wonderful as book one.

The second volume of John Lewis's autobiographical graphic novel trilogy is stunning in its storytelling, art, and ability to bring the past to life. The story is engrossing and extremely powerful, showing where we came from and reminding us that while we've made progress, we're not there yet. The framing of Obama's inauguration is beautifully done and Lewis is an incredible individual. The writing is lyrical but accessible, and gives beautiful voice to the movement. My only complaint is that it's choppy at times, and the transitions are done in an abrupt way. Other than that, one of the best graphic novels I've ever read.
