The plot is easier to lose in this volume than in Vol. 1 or 3.

I think that written in graphic novel form, some students will find the Civil Rights movement is more alive than in history books.
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy history as well as to students who want to know more about or learn about the Freedom Riders and the youth who participated in the Civil Rights movement.

March: Book Two by John Lewis focuses on the Freedom Riders and the lead up to The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It also shows some of the internal conflict within the civil rights movement and highlights the violence they faced from the white supremacist establishment.

March captures these historic events and people is such a unique way. We meet more of the leaders of the civil rights movement in book two. We also get an inside look at the response by the Kennedy administration. It took so much pressure and violence for them to take any action. I’m not making any new points here but it’s frustrating to see how little our society has progressed. After reading two books in the March series, I am really impressed at the ability of a graphic novel to tell a story. 5/5 Stars.

Again. This needs to be required reading in all high schools.
The medium that Lewis chose to write his biography is EXTREMELY effective. It is one thing to read about the violence done to protesters during the Civil Rights movement, it is an entirely different thing when you see it, in stark back and white, drawn for you.
This is an incredibly well-done work of biography.

Similar to book 1, this covers a lot of ground in the civil rights movement, from the freedom rides to the March on Washington. It’s really interesting to read about such familiar events from one specific person’s point of view. I still wish the illustrations were in color to emphasize that this is recent history, but generally, it’s a very moving and inspiring graphic memoir. On to book 3!
