Great transition book to gain further context for the events of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The pairing of Luke and Lando works great and the book provides much needed lore in order to fully flesh out the story of the Rise of Skywalker. Adam Christopher expertly weaves lore from across the Star Wars canon to please fans with numerous Easter eggs and a view of the Sith and the Dark Side that has not been seen since Legends. Would highly recommend.

A solid four out of five stars for me.

I enjoyed the parts with Rey's family very much (cute to see Rey as a little girl, and I felt her parents were fleshed out and made sympathetic characters). Also, the depiction of Lando was great, and the Sith artifacts genuinely quite horrifying. The connections to the ST were well-done, and I think this book does a good job of enhancing TFA and TROS (always my favorite of the ST films) a lot. Not since Claudia Gray's Bloodlines did I feel like an author made me feel so invested in the ST era and characters, and any time someone can be compared to Claudia Gray, that is a big compliment in my book.

Biggest criticism I have is that sometimes the book felt bogged down in descriptions and some of the action sequences in the middle and the end of the book dragged to me.

If Adam Christopher is interested in writing about the Sith, the ST, or Ben Solo training at Luke's temple, I'd be interested in reading it. Adam Christopher did have the best depiction of a Ben Solo that wasn't a baby in the New Canon so far in my opinion.

So, yeah, four out of five stars from me.

Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher fills in the gaps that exist in the Star Wars sequel trilogy as well as giving us a beautiful and complex narrative that delves even deeper into the Star Wars galaxy. With perfect balance, Christopher intertwines legendary pre-existing figures with new fully-fleshed out characters while at the same time paying homage to the comic book stories that have long been adding dimension to the Star Wars universe.

The Luke and Lando team up was exciting, as they both follow the same path for different personal reasons, and I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the deeper look into the story of Rey’s parents. Their love and devotion to their daughter never ceases and we are given plenty of strong characterization of them as individuals–not just as “the parents of Rey.”

Christopher also did a great job of going deep into exploration of the Force, both its light and dark sides which further added dimension to the book.

Finally, I really appreciated the inclusion of Ochi of Bestoon as the principal villain of the story. He is both menacing and violent, arrogant and unpredictable, and his actions paint a picture of an imperfect individual whose arrogance blinds him from the realities of his situation. However, he is often observant, noting with what is probably my favorite line of the book, “Well, Vader was a weirdo.”

Shadow of the Sith should be required reading for any Star Wars fan, but it can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel for anyone wanting to go on an adventure to a galaxy far, far away.
