Reading canon material in the sequel era is always difficult because of my disagreements with some of the overall plot and character choices made, and because previous novels and comics were published while the sequel films were being made, and couldn’t touch certain things. Even now as the Mandalorian and other live action shows explore the post-ROTJ era, it can be frustrating for certain characters to be off limits or conspicuously absent. That being said, this was such a refreshing read. I might be biased because this was written and published after the sequels were finished, and because Lando is one of my favorite characters, but this novel did an absolutely outstanding job threading the needle of some of the weird and nonsensical things proposed in the Rise of Skywalker and connecting it with everything else. I genuinely cried at certain moments. I wish the sequels themselves had had this care for the characters, both new and legacy.

As a Lando fan, this novel and Last Shot are so deeply wonderful for me, and gave him the respect and depth he deserves. Exploring his friendship with Luke made them both such real and lived characters, and it felt like when I read the perfect fan fiction where the author just gets it.

Also I cannot recommend the audiobook more. While I love Marc Thompson dearly, William DeMeritt had such a TREMENDOUS performance and the production was stellar. Please bring him back for both Del Rey and Disney Star Wars audiobooks!

This story, from the author's own mouth, is Episode 6.5. It is about 19 years after Return of the Jedi and 19 years before The Force Awakens.

It is a planet hopping adventure with many different threads...that leads Lando into Luke Skywalker's sphere and along the way they help a number of people (losing some also), but are fighting for good and trying to defeat the Sith and their confederates. It is a bonding story between two heroes that you wouldn't normally put together. It is a really good story.

A lot of what happens within this story is explaining the plot holes in the Sequel trilogy. I doubt this book would've been necessary IF the overall story had been fixed BEFORE shooting The Force Awakens, then The Last Jedi...and the course correction of The Rise of Skywalker.

I don't hate the Sequel trilogy, but we all have to admit that there was NOT one cohesive story told in those three films. I actually enjoyed The Force Awakens. I liked The Last Jedi, though I saw that it broke certain storylines and created possible problems moving forward. The Rise of Skywalker tried to do too much...and in so doing, did pretty much EVERYTHING poorly. I still had fun with what they told, but some things were just stupid IMO.

In this book...it sets the stage for The Rise of Skywalker...so that at the next time I watch the Sequel trilogy, I'll be LESS frustrated (at least I'm hoping so).

We meet and go on adventures with Rey's parents, Dathan and Mirimar. We also find out their mindset on why they left Rey on Jakku (and eventually why they never came back).

We also learn about the blade...that will eventually lead our heroes to Exugol (sp?).

We also meet D-O that we meet in the Sequel trilogy.

We learn about Sith relics and how much power are imbued into them, especially the mask.

We learn how much Lando is missing his daughter, and to what steps he's taken to find her and ANY child kidnapped from their parents (and this is how he learns about Rey [not by name] and searches/helps her parents to keep their daughter safe).

I hope that this is the first of MANY books that the LucasFilm Story Group allows their authors to start writing about this era of time. We really do know SO little in preparations for The Force Awakens and the rest of the Sequel trilogy.

We want more. Thank you.

Wow, there was so much to love about this book. I loved getting to know Rey's parents and seeing little Rey. Seeing Luke as Jedi Master and Ben Solo as an eager learner, Anakin as a force ghost (YASS!!), and so much more.

Even knowing Rey's parents' ultimate demise, their capture by Ochi of Bestoon was written so well, and I cried. This story made me sit on the edge of chairs in fear, it was dark, and it made me really care for little Rey and her parents.

I finally finished Shadow of the Sith. What a book this was. This left no stone unturned as to the Sequel Trilogy. Every mystery was solved. I loved Luke in this. But I surprisingly loved Lando here too. Ochi was great until his dying breath. Rey's parents were great too. Loved them. I really want to watch the sequel trilogy movies after this book.

Hopefully this opens the door for more stories in this era of Star Wars. I can't wait to see what Adam Christopher does next!

This is my most anticipated book of the year and it did not disappoint. There is so much to love about this book. There's so much to enjoy about this book. I'm a lore person and there is so much new lore as well as Sith lure in this and Christopher does an amazing job presenting the new content to you. If you're a sequel lover you will love this added piece to the sequel era. If you're not a sequel fan like myself I still enjoyed this book and like I said in the beginning I was really looking forward to it. Even though you're not a sequel fan or lover you can still really enjoy this book.

My biggest takeaway for this book has to be everything surrounding the Sith Lore. I feel in current Star Wars as well as Canon Star Wars for the past two decades we don't have a lot of Sith Lord to dive in to. So seeing this fresh in Canon makes me really happy.

Some cons for the book, which I think I'm just being a little bit nitpicky. I feel the second act was a little cumbersome. It felt like it went a little off the rails a little bit. Not so much to take you away but you just felt it. There was a lot of questions that I had during the first two acts that I hope was answered in the third which it was. So I don't really want to say that it was a con of the book.

I really do hope this spins off into a certain type of trilogy or a sequel because I want a lot of more of these stories to be told.

So overall the reason why I didn't give it a perfect score is just because of that second act. But it's an amazing read. Like I said in the beginning my most anticipated book of the year and I'm already rereading it.

This is an excellent Star Wars story. I personally really enjoyed the depth this added to The Rise of Skywalker. It was great to get some background and added details to various happenings in TRoS that I have been wondering about.

This book has a nice, quick pace, so reading it is a really easy and enjoyable experience. Christopher does excellent work with his characters.

I really enjoyed getting to read about Rey's parents. I have always had so many questions, and this book was able to answer so many of them. Additionally, I loved getting more post-ROTJ Luke content.

This book should be required reading. It definitely adds much to enjoyment of the sequel trilogy, especially TRoS. So many questions were answered, and yet there is room for more lore and backstory.

Let me interject briefly to say that if you’re stuck on hating TRoS, that is likely to color your enjoyment. I also had my qualms, but the more I read in-universe, the more I cool off about it. Rey is still one of my favorite Star Wars characters, but I’m not so stuck in my head about it that I let it turn into blind hate for the franchise and all they continue to do.

If you want more of Luke Skywalker in his prime, fun Lando Calrissian content, context behind Rey being on Jakku, teenage Ben Solo (yes, you read that right! it’s not a lot, but it is glorious), and Sith lore, this is for you!

A bit darker because of said Sith lore, think along the lines of Last Shot by Daniel Jose Older.

Great narration by William DeMeritt, too.
