This didn't quite work for me. An interesting setting, overall, but the characters were flat and the fact that the protagonist was an author of stories about strange beasts and had a lot of little quips about writers kept taking me out of the story.
A truly captivating read. Ge absorbs you into the narrators head and you don’t get out of it until the end. I would recommend this to anyone interested in seeing the human in monster.

not quite sure what it means but hey it’s not bad
I was so close to giving this book five stars: mythology, eldritch creatures, meditation on the human condition…! It had everything I love! The writing style was also excellent, the somewhat repetitive structure of the chapters reminded me of folk/fairy tales and although I knew the twist was coming, most of the horrifying truths about the beasts were unexpected and terrific. I just wish the author didn’t include the last twist in the story, it made the ending fall flat for me.
This is a strange, beautiful book. It didn't always work for me, but I think that might also have been because I'm not Chinese? I think I missed a number of cultural signifiers. But I still found this book compelling.
