an absolute delight. The characters were alive, and the storyline was larger than life - almost comic book but finely skteched.
Frank, who is a master discographer who only trades in vinyl and can recommend the exact piece that every customer wants (even though they do not know it), oversees the decline of his shop with a paralell backstory of his childhood and his mother's delight in music.

Every time I read a Rachel Joyce book, I know my heart will respond. This is a brilliant book that shows how people connect with each other through music, and the impact music has on people who allow it into their hearts. The characters are brought to life so that you feel like they are your neighbors. Highly recommended.
I really just didn’t enjoy this book. I found myself avoiding picking it up and am happy it’s finally behind me.

This novel made me laugh and cry. I absolutely loved the characters and all of their many flaws. I'd like to say that I enjoyed all the tidbits about the musicians but that was kinda slow for me, yet I still enjoyed the story very much. Looking forward to our book club meeting to discuss!

This was a sweet book, but quite boring. It was hard to get attached to any of the characters, and I didn't really understand the dynamic between Frank & his mother that led to him being so traumatized as an adult. The characters were likable enough, but very flat, & I struggled getting through the book. I would potentially read another of Rachel Joyce's books, but only if it progresses a bit quicker!
I couldn't put this book down! I only wished I knew more of the music. Some time I will re-read it, and research all the music I didn't know, and learn to listen!!!

I fell in love over and over again whilst reading this, I fell in love with each one of the characters like they were old friends, and became deeply emotional with the nostalgic feelings the book invites, whether you're familiar with that generation or not.
As a music fan, but certainly not a music buff, I was unsure if I would feel too 'musically dense' to read this, but it isn't an exclusive book, the music is simply a wonderful tool to look at love and human relationships with.
Like all Joyce's work, it makes you want to go and wrap your arms around the people you love and tell them how bloody brilliant they are.
