I am really struggling with how to rate this but I think the fact that I am writing this at 1 am after reading 75% of the book in one sitting says a lot. This book was all over the place and it felt like a dream where shit just keeps happening and it doesn’t make any sense but you just go with it. The dialogue didn’t really do much for me, but it did feel very fitting for the way the book was written.

sadly, the racism is from the author. while not malicious, the author clearly did very minimal research into Japanese language and culture (although can't be held entirely to blame, as a Japanese person did read over it and apparently chose not to point out the language errors. the cultural errors are results of heavy romanticism)

A mysterious odyssey. It was magical and I truly didn’t know what was going to happen. I loved the descriptions of the other world and the imagination of the author. I’m not sure why I feel I can’t rate this 5 stars.
