This Man

Jodi Ellen Malpas

3.5 AVERAGE

I have to admit that I read loads of smut and subpar literary works but I avoid rating them because I keep thinking I am or should be rating quality not only enjoyment and there is often a huge discrepancy between these two coordinates.
I also do not like belittling someone's work but this time I cannot stop myself. This book is bad. The characters are out of this world unrealistic and the writing is barely coherent. This is worse than 50 shades and much worse than many others in the genre. It boggels the mind that so many ppl could enjoy it. In my oppinion they must be gluttons for punishment, I don't see any other reasonable explanation.
I am 600 pages in the story, somewhere in book 2 of the series, and the main characters haven't had a conversation until now. They know next to nothing about eachother, about what they like or dislike. They have sex and say "I love you", based on a weird kind of punishment sex sessions because that seems to be the only requirment to getting to love someone.

Alpha or arsehole I can't decide!
3.5 star rating for me.

I know this is a much loved book and while I enjoyed the writing Jesse is just not for me.
dark emotional mysterious tense medium-paced

Loveable characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I liked this book a lot! It was very dark and Intense. The chemistry if off the charts between Ava and Jesse. There are a few things that bother me a little. First off Ava is young and care free but she also reacts emotinally all the time. I also don't like how Jesse calls her lady. For some reason that pet name doesn't work for me. But I am looking forward to reading the next book to see what happens.

I am really hoping his big secret is he is a vampire.... I'm gonna give book 2 a chance, but right now this is such a long book for very little to enjoy. I find Ava to be painfully flat, and he just seems like every angst teenager portrayed in 1980's movies.

I really wanted to like This Man by Jodi Ellan Malpas, just like I did Christian Grey and James Cavendish, but this felt too much like control and manipulation for me to handle. James Ward is not the Alpha Male that many readers adore, he is controlling, aggressive, demeaning, and does not take no for an answer. My biggest issue with the book is how sex is used as a weapon to make Ava behave, change her mind, listen to him, ect., like she needs to be controlled like a piece of property. I thought reading it again would help me enjoy the characters more, but the second time around only made me more convinced that she is in a controlling relationship. Just because Jesse believes he is doing it for her own good and prove he is right, does NOT make his actions right. I love alpha male reads, but this one crossed too many lines for me to enjoy and root for their relationship. Though the series does get better and has more action involved, I would not recommend this unless you enjoy yelling at MC choices and behaviors.

I don’t understand why he calls her “lady”!
challenging dark sad tense

To start off, I began reading a Fanfiction story that was this same storyline. There were minor differences and less mistakes. Towards the end, someone commented that it was this story but plagiarized. That was too bad. However, The story is good. It kept me interested enough, but there were times that the MCs really irritated me. For adults, their lack of communication is astounding.

Nonetheless, I will read the next book. I am interested to see how it plays out differently than the Fanfiction I read.
