I really didn't like This Man, Jesse Ward, and his controlling ways. I've had to read the entire series to appreciate him and his issues. I don't think I would have stayed in this relationship as long as Ava did.

OKay so I consider this a dark romance because there's nothing even a little bit redeeming about Jesse Ward. I understand the alpha male trope is a popular one but this takes that and amplifies it to an obnoxious degree. Jesse Ward is an abusive, controlling, posessive, and narcisstic "hero" that continually infuriating me.....but there was something addictive about this book. Maybe because the relationship was so messy that you can't look away it's just so insane. Honestly I feel like the audiobook made this book a little bit better rather than reading it because it adds tone to certain cringe lines. But I would not recommend this book unless you're looking for a messy, fast paced romp with literally no plot.

There are 38 chapters in this book. 38 very long chapters in this book to be more specific.

I hated every page of this book up until chapter 37. The characterization of both of the main characters, and most of the supporting cast is unbearable to me.

Jesse, is a pyscho.... a person who wants to control for no reason other than, he knows he is more powerful that the weaker person.....which would be Ava. He pretty much treats her like dog-shit about 90% of the book, and the other 10% he is borderline nice.... not romantic, not passionate(unless he is fucking her to manipulate her), sweet, endearing....just a little nice.

It took me 3 weeks to read this book.... my sisters read it and kept saying I had to keep going to get to the end.... and I was determined...but ever 5 pages, I was spitting mad, and every 3 pages, he was using sex to control her....and apparently I can't tolerate that.

Ava, she is weak to the next level.... I mean a lot of the female leads in the FSOB-esque type books are a little naive, or innocent, but they all have some type of inner strength, or confidence, or purpose. Ava, she has none of the things that makes a woman redeeming to me. She literally lets him do whatever he wants to her, and she doesn't like it(outside of the sex), and she knows he uses sex to control her, and she knows he is unbearable, but she is soo weak, she can't do anything but let him, and fall in love with him.....

Throughout the book, as a reader, you kind of get a sense of whats going on but not said yet, and that will keep you reading but its long winded.

The book had some good qualities, like I said, certain things are going on that makes you want to find out how it plays out, but I just wanted to skip to those answers and not read anymore dribble and manipulating sex scenes.

This was a 2 star book IMO, but the last 2 chapters intrigued me enough to actually read the 2nd one, and to feel like my time was completely wasted.

This book is a read for when you have NOTHING else to read at the moment....

2022 Update: re-read this book, feel slightly better but absolutely hate everything about each character. It was still unbearable.

While I enjoyed most of the book, the nature of the relationship was difficult to bear. At the same time I couldn't put it down. I would get tired, stop reading for the night and then pick it up with the same fervor the next night... it was kinda sick!

I wanted to like this more..
The H was too controlling for my taste and even though they had great chemistry I felt like everything was rushed in the start and really slow in the middle.
I liked the end so let’s see book 2

(A little more restraint Ava, you can do it)

Wow. I'm overwhelmed with so many different emotions here. Ms. Malpas has me totally desperate to read the next book. I NEED to know what will happen to Ava and Jesse.

This man... has some serious fucking issues.
This man... needs to get a shrink.
This man... needs to calm down.
This man... doesn't deserve Ava.
This man... is overly alpha (which to this point i didn't think was a bad thing)

This book... made me mad.
