Wildwood

Colin Meloy

3.63 AVERAGE

Meloy's Wildwood falls under one of my favorite genres, but I'm not really sure what it is. Children in life-threatening situations? It reminds me of a time in life when everything was severe, and I love how his protagonist--both under 13, mind you--find themselves in the throes of adult life. They are forced to deal with politics, war, loss, death, and regret. These are all things that a typical 13-year-old might be subjected to, but rarely do they have the agency to fight them. I think that is why I appreciate this type of tale so much; it gives power to those who normally do not have it.

I really like this book but I highly doubt any young person could get through it without a dictionary nearby.

A children’s book with somewhat adult language, an imaginative fantasy world with talking animals, beautiful illustrations—what’s not to love?

It was definitely on the long side, but Colin Meloy’s foray into children’s books is a noteworthy one. Excited to read the rest of the series!

I wanted to love this book but nothing about it really hooked me in any way. Only by the very end did I find myself caring about a few of the characters; they just weren't developed enough to make me feel invested in them. This book openly nods to many classics such C.S. Lewis's work but I found it to pale greatly in comparison. I was looking forward to reading the whole Wildwood series but truly there was nothing about the ending of this book that makes me feel compelled to read on.

Lovely. Honestly. I loved the characters and the way Meloy paints the picture for you with words (not to mention the way his wife actually paints the pictures for you, but whatever). I can't wait for the next two!

I was really hoping to enjoy this but unfortunately it just dragged along, a lot happened but it was an extremely boring read.

More like 3.5⭐️. It could have stood some editing.

Great Idea, dubious execution

A by the numbers fantasy children's adventure novel, it's a very safe and solid bet for fans of early Harry Potter, Narnia, and the like. It's far more coherent than Narnia ever was, and even though it plays pretty close to the tropes the author is talented enough to throw in some good lines and exciting moments. It certainly earns its place among the classics it styles itself after.

Liked the book much better than the author's music. Full review here: http://bookaweekwithjen.blogspot.com/2013/01/book-3-of-52-wildwood-by-colin-meloy.html
