Entertaining enough. The writing is find but somewhat loose. Characters will restate information multiple times, making for moments of frustration during the reading. Will not be continuing for the series.

This was a complicated read for me, this was my second attempt at reading this book. I really loved the concept and I love the illustrations. Overall, it had all the makings of a whimsical fairytale read. I did enjoy things about this book. The world-building is fun, and the world which unfolds is full of vibrant characters and interesting imagery. The pacing in this book was unfortunately a weak point, I felt as though it was rather long for no reason. This book was in massive need of being edited down. I was confused while reading this if this book would actually appeal to the target audience, there are some dark moments and the vocabulary seemed strange for a younger audience.

Read this as an adult, and I think it probably would have been my favorite book in middle school :)

I really enjoyed this book in so many ways - the writing, from page to page, was very good and I enjoyed the overall story. I struggled with the believability of some of the characters and that's my primary reason for a lower rating. Would parents really leave a 12 year old alone with an infant to wander the city, in this day and age? Would parents not go to the police when their kids didn't come home for days or weeks at a time - or would they look sad by a window? I began to wonder about Prue's character when she kept telling everyone in the Impassable Wilderness that she was looking for her brother - but never mentioned Curtis. She didn't go to his house when she came home for a bit. I am incredulous that Curtis, a 12 year old, would leave his family behind, or that his parents would be kinda sad but hope he was in a better place - and on the other hand, the Dowager Governess also loses a child and is so devastated she became evil. The plot holes just kept stacking up. But, like I said, I enjoyed the writing from one page to another. And I was sad to see the book end, because it was very entertaining and although the plot had many holes, the characters were very enjoyable.
Also please, please get rid of the term "half breed." It's racist and icky.

A very original story who will appeal to younger and older readers. Gorgeous illustrations, loveable characters, humorous, atmospheric, it's all there. Loved it.
