This was another cute read. August and Sloane's love was kinda like 2nd chance at love. I like that both characters went through personal growth so their love can truly blossom. It was times I didn't like Sloane's attitude or the way she talked to August. I thought it was uncalled for, but she made up for it at the end. I really did enjoy reading the Sugar Blitz series.
I've never left a review for a DNF before since I try to be as fair as possible in what I post online, but I have a lot of thoughts about this one... DNF at 39%
The relationship is not believable at all. They don't seem to have any connection besides mutual sexual attraction and their 12-year-old friendship (which is also poorly developed). I read the first 125 pages, in which I was so annoyed by the constant mentions of sexual attraction and vague references to the past that I went back and tabbed them. There are 28 instances of the fmc or mmc lusting after the other (I was conservative in my count too) and 27 vague references to the past. I didn't count their open discussions of their previous friendship or flashbacks. Just lines like "Only once - with him - had she let down her guard and caused a rift in their relationship they'd never recovered from. That decision had cost her dearly" (10) and "But she didn't have the right to press. They were no longer friends. Maybe they'd get there again, but there would never be more. He'd made that plain years ago" (86).
This means there are mentions of their sexual attraction or the past every 2.25 pages.
Even if you don't mind the constant reminder of their lust or teenage friendship, the book isn't worth reading. The characters have no consistency, it has a 2010 girl-boss level understanding of feminism, and concerns about gentrification are painted as unreasonable and frivolous. I tried so hard to finish the book so I could be fair in my review, but at the end of the day, it's not worth the time.
