Heartwarming, endearing, imaginative. Backman blew me away with his character development. I fell in love with Elsa, and he wrote her voice so clearly. This book is proof that stories are magic, and they have the power to heal.
A sweet story about love, life, and death from the close third perspective of an 8-year old. The author plays with the form (of storytelling) in a very clever way and embodies the characters (specifically the protagonist) so well that I can’t help but wonder, “wait did this happen?” And of course not, silly Sarah, but it is a testament to his writing that it feels real. The discussion about death is very moving, and I loved the metaphor of this fairy—tale land that comes up. Would recommend for readers who have ever thought about death, like fairy tales, or have grandmothers.

I wasn’t sure about this book at first. There’s quite a bit to follow, but I really did end up enjoying this book very much. I actually have laughed aloud and cried and felt so many things while reading. I actually have taken screenshots of parts that moved me or made me think. And as a huge Harry Potter fan, hold a special place for Elsa in my heart.

First book I've read in a long time that made me feel like a kid hiding under covers to read by flashlight at least one more chapter before giving in to sleep and responsibilities. Absolutely loved it!
