I wish I cared about the fairytale aspect of the story, but I didn't. I did end up kind of liking the book, but it's definitely not my favorite of Backman's.

Favorite quote: <i>“People have to tell their stories, Elsa. Or they suffocate.”</i>

Very simply, it’s a story about story telling, told by a skilled story teller. The large cast of characters are well developed, unique entities that you wind up caring about.

What a disappointment after the brilliant "A Man Called Ove."

1.5 stars for a nice premise and Grandmother. But, Elsa is far too precocious and not at all believable as a 17-year old. I'll have to try "Britt-Marie Was Here."

I loved this book! So creative- great characters and ‘fairytale / superhero’ sub plots, and a secret language mixed in - makes it a fun journey. There are many harrowing and sad stories within, nonetheless the story is upbeat and charming. I listened to the audio - really good!

Also translated as “My Grandmother Apologises” which makes better sense!

This book is told from the perspective of a seven-year old child and one of the things I loved so much about the book is that it uses the language and understanding of a seven-year old child (albeit a precociously bright neurologically diverse seven year old child). Not the understanding of an adult framed as the view of a child.

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book as much as the other books I have read by this author, but by half way through I was totally hooked and it was moving up to being my favourite of his books. It is funny and sad. But wonderful!
