I struggled through the first half of this book. The constant jump from what was actually happening to Elsa's fairytales made the pace seem slow and it annoyed me. The last third of this book saved it though - Everything connected beautifully and I do think it was a very sweet story. Just wasn't my favourite of his.

Had a hard time getting into the perspective of the protagonist because it just didn’t feel like a 7 year old. Also, anything with graphic dog death isn’t really for me.

❤️ Amazing. I loved Backman's Ove and Britt-Marie, and really liked Beartown, but if you haven't read any of them yet, start here. Magical. He develops memorable characters that you miss as soon as the story ends. Can't wait for more!
Slow at first, then an un-put-down-able, overwhelming and devastating tale in the nature of Haroun and the Sea of Stories. A moving story of a "different" girl (the type hunted and haunted by "normal" children) who loves her Granny, Harry Potter and other quality literature, and who finds that real life can be as challenging and life-changing as any books. And a necessary pre-quel to Britt-Marie Was Here.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of heart and is all about finding the good in people. It deals with a lot of heavy topics but in a very hopeful, uplifting way.

Talk about being devastatingly wrecked after reading this one. As someone that was raised mostly by grandmother, and still misses her after so many years, this book hit hard. But it’s not all doom and gloom and the main character is an almost 8 year old girl and it’s just so wholesome. Would read again !

Great characters. Took a bit to get used to the narrator being seven, but really well written.
