I cried on the train multiple times while reading this book! The relationship between Elsa and her grandmother is just so touching and uncovering the connections between characters was really enjoyable. So much emotional stuff in here about finding strength in stories and forgiving people their flaws. This book was a recommendation from a friend at work - so glad she pointed me in this direction!

It’s a beautiful book full of love, longing, with wisdom and humour tempering the sad parts.
I am Elsa, also a different child, who was picked on at school, became a big sister for the first and only time at ‘almost eight’, had a granny I adored, although fortunately she lived until I was thirty-nine.
I loved this tale, I had the sense that all things were connected, I also sensed that the fairy tales were an allegory for important family stories.
I am also in aware of the translator, the “bessereissor” who took this tale which contains many words possibly made up in Swedish and made them assessable to us English readers. Henning Koch has done a remarkable job.

I technically did not finish reading this book. I quit 1/3 of the way through because I couldn't get past the language. It's wasn't that it was challenging, I just wasn't feeling it. The made up words, the whole figuring that the man was the monster... My imagination just wasn't signed up for this book. I enjoy Backman, just not this particular novel.
I really wanted to like this book, it doesn’t really deserve a two star, except to say I just never got into it. It just happened, I read it and I waited to feel charmed. Instead I just saw how it could be charming and great for others. Not sure why it didn’t work for me.
