This is a love story between a little girl and her grandmother. It is a mystery. It is a fairy tale. It is complex and very simple. A very good read.

heartwarming and filled with precious characters as usual, but the storytelling piece was oftentimes way more detailed than it needed to be and had me lost at multiple points trying to recall how it tied into the story when they tried referencing it back. It did lull at multiple times too just due to that shifting back and forth between the fantasy storytelling and plot line but has a really wonderful message nontheless!

Love, love, love, love, love this book and will give it all the stars! Fredrik Backman is the best storyteller, and his books take me on an emotional rollercoaster. Part of the reason why I loved this book so much is because it's told from Elsa's POV (she's 7 and I have a kid her age). I know this is a work of fiction, but kids are so much smarter and more intuitive than we give them credit for. Through Granny's death, Elsa was able to learn more about Granny, her job, her impact on others, and her relationship with Elsa's mom. Granny is AMAZING, her humor, love, and support for Elsa knows no bounds. I loved the characters who live in their house and learning more about how their lives are so intertwined. This is a beautiful, profound, and quirky book about grief, forgiveness, found family, love, and life.

This book got REALLY good at the end, but for me it was a bit of a slow start. The grandmother's antics in the beginning kept my attention, but I found myself having a hard time getting through the chapters of detail on the land of almost awake. But it's still a Fredrik Backman book, and even at its slower points it is so beautifully written.
My one gripe - as a dog owner/lover, why were they feeding the dog chocolates and cookies??
