Love, love, love, love, love this book and will give it all the stars! Fredrik Backman is the best storyteller, and his books take me on an emotional rollercoaster. Part of the reason why I loved this book so much is because it's told from Elsa's POV (she's 7 and I have a kid her age). I know this is a work of fiction, but kids are so much smarter and more intuitive than we give them credit for. Through Granny's death, Elsa was able to learn more about Granny, her job, her impact on others, and her relationship with Elsa's mom. Granny is AMAZING, her humor, love, and support for Elsa knows no bounds. I loved the characters who live in their house and learning more about how their lives are so intertwined. This is a beautiful, profound, and quirky book about grief, forgiveness, found family, love, and life.

This book got REALLY good at the end, but for me it was a bit of a slow start. The grandmother's antics in the beginning kept my attention, but I found myself having a hard time getting through the chapters of detail on the land of almost awake. But it's still a Fredrik Backman book, and even at its slower points it is so beautifully written.
My one gripe - as a dog owner/lover, why were they feeding the dog chocolates and cookies??

Hard one for me to get through despite coming from one of my favorite authors. I’m not one for a child main character, nor am I really interested in reading fantasy (adjacent) or adventure-type stories.

Heartwarming, fantastical, and imaginative. This story of a young girl and her Granny blurs the line between fairytales and reality. Another great Backman book that seems lighthearted and fun on the surface, yet innately finds ways to explore the depths of human nature.
