I don’t remember the last time I cried over a novel, but this one got me. This book made me feel like a kid again, while also dealing with some really insightful and deep human experiences. I don’t know how Backman came up with the fairytale aspect and then tied it in with real life, but I thought it was genius. Really enjoyed this and would recommend.

Another heartwarming/heartbreaking story from the author of A Man Called Ove. Lonely outsider Elsa rides through the terrible period after her grandmother dies to find that granny has taken care of helping her through the loss of the person who has been her caregiver, protector, and only friend. Along the way she learns that no one is perfect, even Granny, and that life comes with losses and gains that will help to balance each other out.

Such a wonderful read! Character development is amazing in hs easy way of pulling you in and emphasizing. A wonderful fantasy read.

I loved everything I've read by this author, including this book. I will admit that it took me a while to warm up to the story as I'm not all that keen on stories from the POV of a child. But when I did warm up to it, I fell in love with the story! Loved all the hidden meanings and messages. A delightful and moving story.

3/3.5 maybe
Didn't care for it that much. I only liked some of the characters, the family and the character development but overall just not my favourite fredrik backman book. I especially loved reading about britt marie since ive read "britt marie was here" / "britt marie var här" and seeing the connections and it was LITERALLY a story ending in this book and then a story starting in the next. Also alf was bitter af and I alwyas like a bitter character. Also ill ALWAYS like his writing no matter what he writes, he's good in that way (youll understans th reference if youve read it)

I really loved learning about all the different characters and their back stories and how they connect with one another and how granny wove them into the fairy tales. I also loved the bond and love between granny and elsa. I really feel for elsa and wish she could have had her grandmother longer. I do agree that sometimes the way elsa talked and sidetracked made it hard to keep my attention as another review mentioned. But overall a really great book.
