I definitely hate-finished this book.
It is so disappointing just how much unnecessary drama is in this, because I am actually intrigued by the story itself. Yes, it's a bit cheesy and the antagonists are just cartoon villains, but I didn't even mind that much compared to this weird cheating love triangle the main character is in.
In the first book, the main character was revealed to have cheated on his loving, supportive wife with a work colleague. Immediately I don't like him because of it, but I could at least be neutral if he showed any remorse or made any effort to convince his wife he loves her and not the other woman. This ENTIRE BOOK he is reminiscing about the other woman, putting his family in danger in order to make sure she's okay, makes several internal comments about the passion and love they shared, flirts with her, lies to his wife about their meetings, I mean the list goes on. All while his wife (clearly written by a delusional man because no real woman would ever be so subservient after the shit he's pulled) stands by and supports him no matter what shady shit he does. The only "romantic" moments he shares with his wife are a direct prequel to sex, leading me to believe he doesn't love her at all, just wants to get laid. Absolutely insufferable, self-centered, entitled main character. Not to mention every other woman in this book is a helpless, cardboard cutout who has no real bearing on the plot without a man to help them..
I'll finish the trilogy because, again, I am actually intrigued by the story and would like to know what happens...
Side note, the very end where we find outthat his wife Theresa found love in this town with another man feels like it's going to be played as like a "well now they both cheated!" except the main character cheated on his wife while he still had her (and continues to fantasize even now) whereas Theresa found love after years of grief when she thought her husband was gone forever and she was trying to heal from that. That's just what I imagine will happen, and I hope I'm proven wrong, otherwise it feels like unnecessary drama to take some of the heat off the main character's actions.
