I was oscillating between withholding tears and laughter for the two plane rides it took for me to finish this book. I never regret reading a Mhairi McFarlane book and this is no exception. Absolutely brilliant!

PG romance with a real story about knowing how much you are worth and dealing with tragic loss - TW: unexpected death of a friend
BLAAAAAARG lol that's how I feel about this book.
TW: Death of a character, mentions of child abuse
Ok so... I was actually going to DNF this book around the 33% mark, because it was just... so boring and depressing to me at first. But, if anyone is reading this review and feels similarly, I would say keep reading, because I turned the page and things got interesting.
Mhairi McFarlane always knocks it out of the park with her ability to intertwine romance and wit, and usually, I love it — but in this book, I had a lot of trouble keeping up with the wit/humor. I think it's needed to balance out the heavier topics in the book, but, it was just such an effort to like. Pay attention. And I think readers are dropped in super abruptly to the friend group dynamic, which makes the beginning part even harder to stick with.
This book had so many twists and turns, and it kept me on my feet, even though frankly I thought Susie was kind of a shitty person lol. I also would DIE for Finlay Hart. My new book boyfriend.
I thought there was some technical issues... I don't think Susie and Fin's dad shouldve been on his own... and it sounded kind of like an easy plot fix for him to be "stable" and fine to live on his own after everything. I also think the ending was so rushed and not fair at ALL because readers are in this for a romance read and really it was romantic at the end for like 5 seconds.
Idk. I think... it was a funny read, but I wouldn't read it again, and it's probably my least favorite of her books. But honestly, only Mhairi McFarlane could tell this story the way it's told. There were some important lessons about life, death, and shattering the illusion of what we think people are like versus who they really are.

3.75⭐️ out of 5
went into this blind and didn’t expect to be hit by a huge wave of grief from page one. i started reading this in the airport, couldn’t stop reading it until the plane landed & shed many tears and got weird looks lol. this book is just so heavy, dealing with the sudden loss of a loved one. the author wanted to combine a romance story with grief since we don’t usually see these two things in books side to side. the only bad side to this book for me was: characters speak like they are in a therapy session, explaining perfectly why they did what they did, explaining their thoughts perfectly etc. they are either super self aware and mature, or they are not very realistically written characters - which is what i’d expect from a book like this, since basically everything else is very realistic and raw.

Devoured, as always with MM. Even for her the romance content was light in this one, but her protagonist was spot on as usual.
