This is hands down one of the absolute dumbest fucking books I have ever read, and that’s saying something. The characters suck, the plot is stupid, the writing is so painfully juvenile it feels like a 12 year old wrote it on ao3, and some of the shit said in reference to being queer made me have to put the book down because it was so fucking ridiculous.

It’s every stereotypical crappy high school romance novel except so much worse because the characters are like dramatic whiny cardboard cut outs. It’s not even worth it for so bad it’s good or for a light queer read, this book is just dumb. It’s singular redeeming quality is that it has good deaf representation, and even then the character literally never calls out the ableism of the people around him and never gets an apology from his literal family for refusing to communicate with him. Do not waste your time with this shit.

This was a cute queer romance from one of my favorite YA authors, even if a bit more predictable and trope-filled than his previous books. I especially enjoyed the well-researched deaf representation in this one. I am also a sucker for high school theater books, so that made it extra fun. Some aspects weren't 100% believable, but that's OK. I'd definitely recommend this one!

I really really enjoyed this book. Loved the plot and even guessed the ending :) — also really loved the deaf/hard of hearing/hearing aids representation. As someone who wears them it was very nice to read about someone else with my disability.

So Much Drama!
Family drama - Jackson's parents are divorced. Jackson is deaf, he can hear some with his hearing aids, but still misses parts of conversations. ONLY his step-mother has made any attempt to learn sign language, not his parents, not his sister.

Sibling Drama - Jasmine - Ugh, I would give away too much if I told you about Jasmine.

Theater Drama - Jackson is a Techie. The actors are horrible to him. The teacher is very dismissive.

Liam Drama - Both Jackson & Jasmine have a crush on Liam, so Jackson decides he must pine for Liam in silence.

I liked this book. I know students who would like this book. A few years ago, I would have purchase a copy for my high school library without a second thought, but now, I am not sure I can. I'm just not sure if it violates the Obscenity clause of the Texas Penal Code. Reasons in the spoiler below.

SpoilerJackson is a teenage boy, who has a physical reaction to Liam's touch. The author describes this reaction as a tightness in his jeans or that it is fighting against his underwear. This is mentioned at least 7 times in the book, there are also a few references to Liam having the same type of physical reaction. There is also a scene that alludes to Jackson masturbating after Liam touches his knee.

With the way Texas laws are today, I just don't think I can take the chance with that many references to their physical reactions.
