I really enjoyed this story and it had soooo much potential, but the rushed ending really ruined it for me. Spoilers ahead:

We weren’t given any really conclusion to Gus and Chloe’s relationship. Did they get remarried, engaged??? There was no conclusion or reveal as to the creepy men following her, or the threats they received in regards to their business. What happened with Karl? Did he go back to Seattle???? And what was the point of the cliff hanger with Cole and the doctor. That came out of left field, especially when I wondering about all the other lose ends. I’ll check out the next books to see if we get any answers but I am sad bc I thought this was turning out to be such a great read but in the end let down.

After the ending of book one I was keen to get back to the Herbert family and see what happened when Gus found out his ex-wife was the one who saved their company by buying them out. It set me up to think Chloe was this shrewd calculated character, but really she wasn't and in very quick time she realises she's still in love with her ex-husband Gus. Of course he knew this first, despite supposedly being a grumpy lumberjack he was really the sweetest guy. I don't generally love surprise pregnancy stories but I did enjoy the romance and their reconnecting. Definitely some unresolved plot lines that I hope will be explored more in future books around the family.

I loved parts of this. I was so excited at the end of the first one when we found out she came in and bought out her exes company like a bada$$, but then I didn’t quite feel that bada$$ energy from her in this that I was hoping for. Gus was sweet, even though a previous hookup of his is in here, you like her and it didn’t bother me. I’m not a huge fan of second chance, and this one was not bad.

I liked the side characters a lot actually and the premise was great, it just lagged a bit and I found myself hoping something more exciting was coming, only to be a little let down. It was cute and sweet and they were hot together though. I also appreciate that the characters were a little older, which I don’t get to read as often.

Every chapter of this book captivates me completely. The use of tropes is executed brilliantly, enhancing the narrative in the most delightful way, especially with themes like exes and unexpected pregnancy. The elements mesh seamlessly, creating a narrative tapestry that's both intricate and enthralling. It's fascinating to witness the characters grapple with similar challenges and misguided emotions towards each other, only to undergo a transformation that deepens their connection more profoundly than before. The evolution of their relationship is a testament to the author's skill in portraying complex emotional journeys.

Pain in the Axe is promising story. It really was. Until I got lost on following the writing. The characters turn out to be immature.

Moving on....
