Accidental pregnancy is not usually my thing, but this book does it well. It helps that it was accidental pregnancy mixed with revenge plot mixed with second chance romance. I mean, what could go wrong, right? Well, throw in an FBI investigation, some backwoods destruction, and some family rebuilding on both sides of the page and you have Pain in the Axe. This book will give you the feels - there is love, laughter, suspense, secrecy, sex, second chances, and growth all around. It was my first Daphne Elliot read, but it definitely won’t be my last and there is quite the cast of characters in this one to follow for at least a few more books

“I’d spent the evening alternating between feeling simmering resentment and genuine affection for this man. How could he infuriate me so much one second and then hypnotize me with his tongue the next?”
I am thoroughly enjoying these visits to Lovewell with the Hebert lumbersnacks! But August Hebert isn’t just a lumbersnack, he’s the whole dang buffet! Tragedy and toxic family drove them apart twenty years ago, but now Chloe LeBlanc is back and out for vengeance. Fully in her villain era, Chloe strides in, ready to upturn Gus’s lumber company and life, but old feelings and reignited sparks fly. I loved this animosity-to-lovers, spicy workplace romance. Chloe’s bad bish vibes owned from page one and Gus’s quiet but domineering grump melted my heart. Brimming with Daphne’s signature humor and heart with a dash of suspense, Pain In the Axe will make you swoon. Chloe and Gus’s decades-long love story was wonderful; from enemy exes to co-parents with benefits, their journey had a little bit of everything. Family cameos were hilarious and lovely. Clive moments made me snort and sniffle. If you’re looking for a brawny and broody book boyfriend, you’ll love August Hebert!

No one loves like Gus loves 🥰
The way Daphne tells a story is addictive, she gives you a little suspense, genuine emotions and the perfect amount of heat and she does it with her own little flair. I thought the Gagnon men were irresistible, but then I got to experience Gus Herbert, and I don’t think I was ready. When I say that Gus does everything with his whole body and soul that would be an understatement. He’s the oldest Herbert, the one to step up when their dad let them down. When his past walks back into his life he sees a second chance that he never expected, and now he’s going to do everything he can to win back the one he let get away.
I really liked this one, Gus is the best, and Chloe is not going to fall for his charms, so watching them come together is nothing short of amazing. This world and these characters make reading fun. And I can’t wait to read more!

Generally entertaining, with some interesting angst and family dynamics.
That said, it really felt like it needed some additional editing. I don’t want to hear again the word lumberjack for at least another year (it was mentioned 38 times as both noun and adjective, I had to check)… besides that, other thoughts/conversations felt repetitive and I also found at least one contradicting detail in the story.
Besides that, if you enjoy good family connections and this trope (like I did), you will have a nice enough read.
