I have very mixed feelings about this book. I'm truly not sure whether I enjoyed it, but I also found it nearly impossible to put down. For as serious as the topics of this book are, the way it was written doesn't really allow for any obvious depth into them, the whole book read as very surface-level to me. Yet at the same time the short stanzas of prose allow the reader to get a glimpse into Kristina/Bree's struggles and feel just as lost, confused, uneasy and on edge as she does. It goes beyond the need for written depth by creating it with the physical shapes and structure of the words on the page. The writing style also allowed me to fly though this book, so do not be intimidated by the thickness of it.

Kristina is a great student and a perfect daughter. But one day, on a trip to visit her father, Kristina meets a boy and the monster: crank. The old Kristina starts to disappear and her alter-ego, Bree, takes over. Bree is a fearless risk-taker. Bree becomes swept up in a world of addiction and lies as the monster takes over her life.

This was a powerful read. Knowing that is based on a true story (the author's daughter was a meth addict) makes it pack that much more of a punch. Hopkins' verse is beautiful and haunting. This book has been challenged many times, and I'm sure it's because of the language and subject matter. But meth addiction is not pretty. Crank really makes you think about the consequences of drug use and the heartbreaking effect addiction can have on a family.

This book stayed with me long after I finished reading it. I will definitely be picking up Glass and Fallout.

Not my favorite book I’ve ever read, but the way it’s written is pretty cool (ended up liking it more than I expected when I started). Felt very dreamlike & was quite mesmerizing

Ellen Hopkins was one of my favorite tween/teen authors. I love her style of prose and her ability to tackle difficult subject matter and present it to a younger audience.

The format of this book was very distracting.

Hated the end

I wouldn’t read it again. It’s a heartbreaking tale of a girls life destroyed by drugs. But Hopkins does a good job in her storytelling and prose.

This book hooked me in with the unique writing style. I could not put it down and continued that theme throughout almost all of Ellen Hopkin's books. I couldn't believe just the edge that poetry could have on an already emotional story. I needed to keep reading to find out what Kristina/Bree would do next.
