I get why the author decided to go with a poetry styled prose, but I didn't like it. I felt very distracted by trying to glean meaning from the look of each small section, instead of from the actual words. I think it made less of an impact than it should have for that very reason.

Hopkins based this book about a teenager addicted to meth on the life of her own daughter, which kinda broke my heart. The entire book is written in free verse form which annoyed me at first, but ended up being a breeze to read. I've worked with meth addicts before, so to read about how innocently it can all start was powerful and sad, although this particular story was a little cliche.
4.5 stars
Kristina is a good student and doesn’t get in trouble. She goes off to spend some (court appointed) time with her who she doesn’t know well. While she’s there, she meets Adam and he convinces her to try drugs. She returns home a changed person.
Written in verse for a YA audience, CRANK is based on Hopkins’ daughter’s addiction to meth. It provides a first hand look at the way addiction affects users and their families. I’m sure many families will relate to this book and take comfort in knowing they’re not alone.

I found it very interesting. I really hope parents use the book to talk to their children about drugs and what drugs can do to you.
I've been meaning to read this book for years now and it's finally become available to me. Wow! Just... wow. This is a YA book that isn't your typical, brainless portrayal of OMG-angsty-teen-drama(!). This is a frightening and very believable work of fiction, based on real people and real life events, that showcases the downward spiral into addiction. The choice of writing style helps to add to the ups and downs of and addict's day-to-day and is a concise yet very complete way of telling this story. Not to mention a lyrical and unique form of writing. I don't know if I'll continue with the other 2 books of the trilogy --- I don't really see a need as this novel served its purpose well --- but this book is a must read and I'd recommend it to everyone.
I really loved the creative writing style and how quickly the book moved. The author was great at describing how quickly addiction happens and how much it can affect your life. I thought that the part where she was going to tell her mom about what happened with Brendan and she says something like "how I would give ANYTHING to have the monster" was a perfect example. I can't wait to read the next 2 books and see what happens.
I have no idea how to rank this book. It was an amazing, fascinating read, yet so incredibly stressful, depressing, and heartbreaking. It is written in poetry form and follows the story of a teen whose parents are too busy paying attention to themselves to notice their daughter is addicted to crank. Being that I am incredibly naive, I had no idea what crank was, other than some sort of drug. I was so enlightened.
This poor girl gets sucked into the world of drugs and ends up going deeper and deeper, to a point that I don't think she would ever be able to crawl out. It took my breath away to read it. I am not a parent, so I do not know how difficult it is to raise children, especially teens. But my goodness, surely you can tell when your child is addicted to drugs, especially one as powerful as this. The sad thing is that her trip down this terrible road started because she was forced to spend a week or so with her father who had no interest in spending time with her, so she sought out people to pass the time with. Inevitably, they were the ones who walked her into the world of crank.
When I was done with this book I just wanted to scream "pay attention to your children!"
