Whew finally I finished this. Honestly, I much prefer the first book to this one. I mean, sure, we finally got some world-building about the Republic and the countries outside of it. I especially liked how
the Colonies, which had been described as so much better than the Republic, turned out to be a capitalistic hellscape.
However I absolutely cannot stand the horrible love triangle between
Day, June and Tess. And I’m not even going to include Anden in this because no. I mean seriously how do you go about establishing a sibling platonic bond between two characters in the first book and then have the audacity to have the younger girl have a crush on him. And then Day saying that yeah we could make a great couple???? NO!!! Now, do I think that Tess raised some valid concerns about June? Sure, if we don’t include slutshaming her for dollowing the Patriots’ plan. But still. Also Day is dying??? He gave up on June?? What is happening in the House of Commons??
Anyway, I am still going to finish this series because I am not a quitter.

This second installment in the Legend series followed June and Day on the run, collaborating with the Patriots rebel group, and discovering secrets about the Republic and its politics along the way. I actually liked this book better than the first one because it had deeper political intrigue and more realistic relationship conflicts, both between the two protagonists and with the supporting side characters who would question what they were doing. While the first book made them look like typical incredibly skilled despite being young YA protagonists, this one showed that they are still flawed and are not invincible as they faced challenges and hurdles. I still would've enjoyed this series a lot more when I was in middle school but I am still curious to continue the series and see how it all plays out.

the author seems to not know that often what's wrong with oppressive governments isn't just the people in charge but the system itself that harms people. you can't make change from within a system if the system is designed to keep oppressive power structures in place

and like the elector can't change everything wrong about it because of checks and balances like if other segments of the government are corrupt then he's gonna have a hard time changing it and if there werent any checks and balances in the first place thats PART OF THE PROBLEM ok if i think about this anymore im gonna explode

minor spoilers
also what the hell was up with day and tess like he says some bull like "she had grown up into an adult since we first met" she is 13 years old. what the hell. that plot line and june and whats his face i dont remember his name the goddamn elector's son they use to try and say its about the people not the system anyways it's all very obviously a way to add some conflict in june and day's relationship (which i think is stupid just like it was unnecessary in the first book it annoyed me here) but it's so weird like tess is 13 and day is 16 and he sees her as a sister where did THIS come from and june is still 15 and the elector's son is 20 YEARS OLD. it's not ok even if they went to the same college thats still weird dude 13 year olds were babies to me when i was still basically 14 how are you at 20 kissing a 15 year old. and day you said you saw her as a sister like a couple of weeks ago and now you're claiming a 13 year old is an adult what the hell.

and coming from a queer person, the reveal from thomas is dumb and it doesn't make sense with the context of the first book

i'd give it the lowest rating (0.25) but i thought june's conflict was interesting and wasted the great scene she had in the first book where she reads her brothers' secret journal. like why is her motivation for not going back to the republic staying with day when she has a moral compass and switched sides because she disagreed with the violence the republic aimed towards their own civilians not just because she thought day was hot god this is so infuriating ughghgjkdsjklds. and that could've been super interesting!!!!!!! why didn't you do anything with that!!!!!!!! it makes perfect sense that she'd want to go back a little bit i just hate the motivation she was given for why she doesn't when the original book SPELLED IT OUT FOR YOU ok i'm done i swear

i wanted to keep this review short just stick to the first paragraph but i came back to try and find other haters of this book in the reviews and i just got angry again lol. sorry for the run on sentences i am so mad rn
tl;dr this book isnt great

A little saddened about how difficult I found it to get into the beginning of the book but once I passed the halfway point I was very much captured again.

Alot of this book stressed me out with the questioning of loyalties and uncertain behaviour from characters but it made it all the more interesting.

I am intrigued by the introduction of Anden as a character and am hoping he is as good as he seems. I am slightly irked by his attraction to June given his age when she is only 15-16 but I do appreciate his calm demeanour.

That ending ripped my heart in two and I am bracing myself against the events of the final book in the trilogy, I truly hope June and Day are able to thrive and prosper.

Weird age gap relationships, like Tess is 13 and she kisses Day, whose 15. Then, Anden, 20, is attracted to and kisses June, 15. It made me feel uncomfortable.
