Starts off a little slower but definitely had me wondering where the story was going to go and how all the little pieces that seemed so important were going to end up becoming significant. Kara did a wonderful job weaving all of those pieces of the story together in a way that had me aching for more by the end!! Immediately had to dive into book 2, Illuminance!
I felt for our FMC so much!!! Good lord that poor girl has had a rough life growing up in the soldier’s training camp. Her dad is the utter worst and sets her up to go to the palace where the drunken King is hosting guests for the first time in a long time to arrange marriages. Amira has never been anything but a pawn and a servant to her father and longs for freedom and to escape her current life. However, there’s more at play here and can she leave everything she’s ever known behind.. and who can she trust?

I really enjoyed this book! I hadn’t read about it before starting, so I didn’t know what to expect. The book kept me totally engaged the whole time.
I loved how Lu (Amira) developed such strong relationships as she went along her journey. Opal, Avery, Sarah and Linnick all seemed to really care about her, and played an important role in her feeling some semblance of home, despite her awful father.
Not to mention the complexity of the love triangle!
From the beginning, Graylen was way more intriguing than Adrian. Blame it on Adrian’s blonde hair but it was over for him (in my eyes) once we met Graylen 😂 The way that he protected Amira/Lu showed that he was clearly the one who had her back. Adrian sucks and there were hints of it throughout that made me sure he was not going to be a good fit for Lu.
Overall, loved the book and I’m off to read the next one!

What an amazing debut novel!!! I am so thankful that I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, and I'm so hooked!!
Without spoilers, I loved a few things. The love triangle that developed was very well done, I haven't read a fantastic love triangle in a while, and I liked this one. The flower and plant references and chapter names were on point, loved it. The foreshadowing throughout the entire book up to the shocking cliffhanger,
