Reviewing as the duet:
I really enjoyed this duet.
I found a lot of humor in Cole; as he's this horrible serial killer that does such awful things. LOL! Don't get me wrong, he does do awful things, but his moral compass weighs SOOO heavy on the good side. He tries so hard to convince himself and the reader to believe he's this true sociopath with absolutely no regard for humanity. Most of the kills, as you read, you'll find that he did it to better his life or those he was "close" to. A vigilante of sorts, but the compass, albeit on the good side, does be gray af.
I loved Cole and his progression through the duet. He was a protector above all. He is DADDY. He was shown that although he had sociopathic tendencies, his emotional range varied a lot more than his life forced him to believe. I found Cole to actually hold on to his control (sexual desire wise) and that was a breath of freshness I didn't anticipate. It was nice. Yes, he was enamored with Mara, and their chemistry was INSANE, but it was mature. If that makes sense... It didn't feel like horny teenagers/young adult impulsive.
As a fan of horror, I also enjoyed the art in death that's touched on in this duet. It was a disturbing, but interesting thought to sit with. Coming from different places as well; the only evil, Alastor and the morally gray, Cole. Pride in their art all the same.
I enjoyed Mara's character because she stepped up to the plate instead of cowering or complaining the entire time. I feel like her economic status was very real and portrayed well THROUGHOUT the duet. Different things matter to different people and life can force that point of view on you.
Also:
"Blood scythes across the snow, a parabola of crimson on the blank white canvas."
Quentin Tarantino Django Unchained cotton field vibes. If you know what I'm talking about, you get it. ♥
This duet was like a vibe mash of The Mindf*ck Series and the show You.

This one was a little better than the last one you could see more of the relationship between Cole and Mara, which is what I felt was missing in the first. I wouldn’t say it was a great dark “romance”, but better than the first one.
