I really enjoyed this! Reading from Mickey's POV was super fun. He is witty, funny, self depreciating, sarcastic, and intelligent (for the most part... haha). He's an historian, and he walks the reader through the histories of different expeditions and things that have gone wrong in the past, and those history lessons tie in really nicely to his current day. There are also great discussions on philosophy, the follies of war, capitalism, the meaning of life... yet, it doesn't feel overbearing or heavy handed.

This book is definitely more character based than plot, but I didn't mind because of how much I enjoyed his narrative voice. Even so, there are several chapters in the middle of the story that were quite repetitive, and if I wasn't doing an immersion read they probably would have dragged a lot for me. Speaking of which, if you can get your hands on the audiobook, do it! It's very good.

The book does end a bit abruptly in my opinion, I didn't realize it was the last chapter until I had turned the page and saw the rest of the book was an excerpt of Antimatter Blues. I think I would eventually like to check that one out.

Extremely fun premise, and like all good sci fi lends itself to lots of good reflective moments about humanity and some big philosophical questions.

I’m excited to read book 2!

I wanted to read this before watching the movie and I enjoyed it! It was definitely weird, and had a lot more philosophical discussions than I was expecting but I enjoyed the plot and was kept on my toes most of the time. I also like learning about their history and the degrees of success other colonization attempts like theirs had experienced.

I loved the premise and world building in this book, and I thought the first half of it was really fun to read, but it feels like it didn’t really go anywhere interesting. I ended up a bit dissatisfied.
