An enjoyable, straight forward read which does make you think from time to time. Strong start but like others have said I found the pacing a bit off and no real stakes. I also felt like the history parts of the book were story ideas that the author had but hadn't been able to make them work, if that makes sense.

An absolute hoot, somewhat philosophical of a science fiction novel that is perfect for John Scalzi fans.

Mickey 7 is an expendable. When he goes on a mission and doesn't die, he is shocked to discover that there is now a Mickey 8. In their world multiples aren't allowed, and Mickey 7 must do all he can to save both of their lives.

I loved this one. I haven't read science fiction in a little while and it completely hooked me. I have the second book and I'm planning to start it right away.

Hate to say this but the movie was significantly better. I saw another reviewer say this read as a short story padded out for publication as a novel and o couldn't agree more. There are some good moments but there is a lot of fluff. I do think the audio production is really cool though, loved the sound effects.

Would’ve rated this higher had I not seen the movie first and saw what this book COULD’VE been.

Very slow pacing; almost no plot, mostly just exposition. The characters weren’t particularly likable. Half of this book was the Mickeys arguing over duties/rations, the other half was exposition about failed colonies/Mickey’s past lives. The concept of an Expendable was cool, but the execution was lackluster imo.

Do yourself a favor and go watch Mickey 17

i’m not big on the science part of science fiction, so this book was already a struggle for me to latch onto. despite that it was a fun read, engaging storyline, likeable main characters, but i feel like it focused more on the conundrum of immortality that i don’t rly gaf about and less on the hundreds of planetary mass genocides the human race fictionally committed. kind of feels unfinished / undeveloped, like a book meant to have a sequel
