Really enjoyed the premise, setup, and writing, but I feel like the stakes established in the beginning were set higher than the book accomplished. For the majority of the book, the only real complication of there being two of him is that his food rations are halved. Most of the narrative would not have been impacted if Mickey8 hadn’t been created. The ending also felt a little lazy, but maybe it’s because a second book was coming so there wasn’t need to explore further.
so as soon as i got out of the movie theater, i got on the wait list for the book and i was not disappointed! the book definitely goes into the reasoning why they’re even trying to settle these crazy ass planets. I do love his obsession with the other failed colonies in history because i would do the same. theres this hours long video essay about watergate that i love rewatching on youtube. It helps me cope so i totally understand Mickey7 on this one. I think Eight is being bitchy for a valid reason. I would be pissed too if i was hungover and starving for a couple of days. and then the person i saved wants to get in trouble and cut my food off more! crazy! both of them are kinda snarky in their own way which i liked. I do understand why Mickey is so depressed because in a way, he is a useless human that they just keep throwing away. He wrestles with the Ship of Theseus problem throughout the book and if he is really Mickey or just something that is told that he is Mickey because he has all the same memories.
I liked that Mickey acknowledges that Berto is kinda the root of all his problems but he is willing to forgive his friend because nobody is perfect. Except Nasha. Nasha is perfect. So human and so loving and understanding. And if there were two of my man, i would do the same. Very chill with the discovery of two Mickeys. I still kinda dont understand why Cat narced on them. she was fine with all of it in the gym then she just walks into his room, unannounced, and finds the two Mickeys with his girlfriend and then its suddenly not ok? I dont know i didnt like that.
This is a scifi novel and i tend to expect alot of world building and explaining of how the science works in this universe but it was really all the way to the end with this book. The item that ends up solving Mickey7’s problem is introduced like a chapter or two before he uses it. Literally during the climax of the book. This made the ending feel a bit rushed but i know there is a second book so maybe we get more explanation then.

Fun and quick read. Really enjoyed the concept of the expendable and a world where being “immortal” is achievable, but in a way that is so unappealing that only the most desperate would agree to it. Mickey is a fun character and I felt like I was in his corner right away. It was refreshing to spend time with the lowest person in the mission rather than another story from Captain Save the Universe’s perspective.
Empecé a leerlo para ir a ver la película de Robert Pattinson y ahora recién caigo en que Mickey7 y Mickey17 no son necesariamente lo mismo.
Me aburrí en la segunda mitad, tbh.
