| I really enjoyed it. Definitely some trigger warnings for child loss, which happens literally in the first chapter. The Earth based magic system and the whole world building really forced me to read closely, which was great! I tend to skim while reading and that would have been very difficult for this book. This author is a very prolific author and it definitely shows. It was written beautifully and I loved the way the author weaved in and out between the various character POVs. A very solid 9/10 for the twists and amazing narrative, would definitely recommend.

It took me a while to get into the book. Once I solidified in my mind the characters, plots, and timetable it was much better. I liked the surprise twist. This book lost my interest several times and ultimately the world building left me with more questions than answers.

The character stories are really good so it kept me involved even as I was confused about the greater picture. But watching that greater picture finally come into focus with our main characters front in center in the photo holding the camera clicker was a process I almost wish I could have again.

This Balinese ok all came together for me at the end. Made me curious to possibly read the next book even though whole reading this one I swore I just wanted to finish this book but now I’m kinda commutes to the characters.

There are books and there are books. I have to say some of my earlier 5 star ratings feel inadequate in comparison. Stunning character writing and incredibly evocative worldbuilding, a careful treatment of oppressive systems and dehumanisation that never makes the fantasy setting feel cheap or contrived. This is a beautiful, beautiful novel. A friend said to me that they hadn't read anything new in some time because they kept rereading this series and I have to say I understand the impulse.
It's rare for me to finish a book and immediately jump on the sequel, normally I prefer to let things breathe and pick up something completely different next, but I was already halfway through the sequel the day after I finished this book.
Jemisin is an incredibly talented writer.

Their was so much to like about this book but somehow it lost me a number of times and it took far longer to get through than it should have. World building is great. It also feels like a different voice but I don't think I really engaged with any of the characters and the plot didn't really work for me. I will however give the second book a go. A strong 3+star.
