I really had a hard time appreciating this book for the first third. It was interesting, but I wondered why it was a classic. At the half way point, that all changed.
Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton are now two of my favorite characters in any book. There is such a nobility to these men in the face of horrible circumstances. I hope I can emulate their characters in my life (well except for Carton's shame and self-loathing - something I thought was such a keen observation to add in a book in the 1800s. Dickens' ability to write about psychological trauma before anyone even knew what it was was also incredible.)
I was totally unprepared to feel dramatic tension in the book. I you would have told me there was dramatic tension I would have laughed.
It was frightening to hear about the insanity and anarchy of the French Revolution. The only word I can use to describe it is chilling. The book truly paints a terrifying portrait of the ferver of it all and of the lawlessness. I felt as if I was there.
It was such an interesting book. It is my first real foray into a true classic and I was unexpectedly rewarded.

Great Book!
siempre será uno de mis favoritos!
Me encanta porque a pesar de ser de época, no es lento, todo es muy rápido y no sabes en que momento todo se entrelaza

Masterfully written. The language is so beautiful. For awhile I was wishing it was longer so we could really get into the characters, but after finishing I can realize that its brilliance is in its sparseness.
Made me cry. I love Sydney Carton.
And of course, Madame Defarge.

Tale of Two Cities is an excellent novel written by Dickens later in life displaying his full talent. This is his second piece of historical fiction taking place in London and Paris during the French Revolution. Dickens sympathy with the struggle against the aristocracy is balanced by the portrait of human immorality when people go to extremes. In true Dickensian manner there are both great villains and heroes confronted with major life defining challenges. The book has the best opening paragraph in literature.
OK, Chuck, we get it - wine is blood and blood is wine. Yeesh.
