I went in completely blind, but this book grabbed me right from the start. It's got a lot of plot, and the main characters are wonderfully fleshed out. The writing is so full of heart, and there's a lot of empathy and kindness in the information that's given to those who might not be familiar with Ojibwe traditions. There are a lot of really difficult topics that I think are handled really well. There are a few minor points I could critique, Daunis is very "not like other girls" and by the end the "secret squirrel" joke had really run its course with me, and the "guy lies" felt juvenile, but that might be different for YA readers. Also a few of the side characters could have done with more fleshing out, mainly the mom and dad.

Okay, this blew me away! I was not expecting much but this delivered. It is definitely YA and seemed a bit long, but I loved the background on the culture and the language. A great book, for sure.

Wow. This book is perfection. A tragedy upends Daunis’s normal life, plunging her into the middle of an investigation that reveals the town’s secrets. A thrilling mystery with complementing themes around Native American culture, family, friendships and community.

This book felt a little fake. But the mystery was good, but Daunis was really annoying.

I can’t believe this is a debut! Wow. There were some issues with pacing, but those last 150 pages grabbed me and would not let me go until I finished the book. What a wild ride! Beautiful prose. Nuanced. This is a powerful novel that everyone should read.
