4.5 stars - I *know* its YA but dropped half a star because I could not get past how many times Daunis uses the phrase secret squirrel in this book lol. other than that, I learned a lot about Ojibwe/Native American culture, looooved that it was set in the UP, and was engrossed in the unfolding mystery. WOO
Μετά από περίπου ενάμιση μήνα ολοκλήρωσα αυτό το βιβλίο 650 σελίδων. Γενικότερα νομίζω πως θα ήθελα να το είχα διαβάσει στα αγγλικά γιατί η μετάφραση με έκανε σε διάφορα σημεία να νιώθω άβολα. Παρόλα αυτά, είναι ένα βιβλίο που σου μαθαινει έτσι κάποια ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία για την κουλτούρα των Ινδιανων, μιας φυλής που ειδικά εγώ δεν έχω συναντήσει σε άλλο βιβλίο μέχρι τώρα μπορεί ούτε αναφορικά. Επομένως, είμαι χαρούμενη που ήρθα σε μια πρώτη επαφή. Τώρα η αλήθεια είναι πως θεωρώ ότι οι 650 σελίδες ήταν και λίγο υπερβολή, καθώς θα μπορούσε να είναι συντομότερο. Είναι όμως ένα ωραίο και πρωτότυπο βιβλίο που κρατάει το ενδιαφέρον στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος αμείωτο και που εγείρει την φαντασία με εικόνες από μια τελείως διαφορετική κουλτούρα και τροπο ζωής και το μυστήριο της ιστορίας είναι αρκετά δυνατά πλεγμένο.

The theme & messaging that the author was trying to get across were clear, and it was definitely a thought-provoking novel.
My biggest gripe was with the FMC’s internal monologuing. There were several times that scientific facts were being listed and seemed to almost to the point of overkill to prove she was smart.

this book included a lot of my favorite things: historical narratives from marginalized groups, mystery/true crime, feminism, and collectivism vs individual growth. i loved reading about Michigan Tribes. it felt like learning something new about my home. there is so much truth in this book - about the past & future, what lies between.
