Another book that I will be recommending widely for all to read. It deals with very heavy topics, but it is so compelling that I demolished the book in 2 sittings.

I probably would have liked this book a lot more when I was 15, also towards the end of the book things started to get more unrealistic

I had been told to read Firekeeper's daughter for years, and it did not disappoint. I read it quickly for the story, and want to read it more times to absorb the ancestral Indigenous knowledge. I am going to read the next ones too
I’m still giving this book 5 stars, even though I did have some issues with the ending.
But first, isn’t this book cover gorgeous? I read this book in honor of #nativeamericanheritagemonth and I can’t recommend it enough! I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was phenomenal. She is indigenous and so all the words and phrases are pronounced correctly. I learned about the Ojibwe community, culture, and felt that I was on the journey of self discovery with the main character. It has beautiful parts and it has some dark parts.
As I’ve said before, I enjoy a book that can keep me guessing and this book did that up until the end! It had you thinking it was going one way only to go in a whole other (a direction I thought was almost too obvious which is why I didn’t think it could be that!). The ending broke my heart, which is also why I think it’s a good book and will keep its 5 stars. I think there is a lesson to be learned from the main characters journey. It’s just a sad lesson.

This is just one of those books that is a true favorite. I honestly can't say anything bad about it.
Firekeeper's Daughter follows Daunis, a biracial (Native American and white) young woman, who has trouble feeling fully accepted in her tribal community. Daunis, at the beginning of the book, has recently suffered a sudden and unexpected loss in her family. After she then witnesses a murder, she is approached by undercover agents from the FBI who want her help in an investigation that involves a sudden increase of meth overdoses in her tribal community. Daunis, struck by grief, decides to help.
The plot of the book is amazing. The mystery was great, and kept me on the edge throughout while also packing an intense emotional punch. I grew to love Daunis deeply by the end of the book.T he love she has for her community, family, and friends is so clear- it jumps off the page. She learns and grows, and by the end, has aged tremendously from the pain she has had to endure. It is heartbreaking. Firekeeper's Daughter tells an important story about how Native American women's suffering is- more often than not- ignored. The book realistically covered how crime affects Native communities and the many complexities that come with being Native American.
The writing was simple, yet deeply beautiful at many points. I teared up while reading this more than a few times. It could be hard to read at times, but it never felt overly gratuitous. I appreciated all that I learned about Ojibwe culture and customs. The resilience and love that the people in this community have is very powerful, and you can't help but connect to it. There are a lot of different themes in this book, but I feel as though all of them were written about well, and with so much care. The cover of this book is also one of my personal favorites.
The fact that this is Angeline Boulley's debut book is crazy to me, and I can't wait to read more of her work.
