*Audiobook* As a native Michigander, I can verify the lingo used in the book as authentic. I, however, don’t know much about Native American tribes in Michigan, despite my great grandma being full Cherokee. This was interesting and beautiful to see that Native American cultures and traditions are being carried on. I loved most of the story, my only complaint is that some of it becomes too detailed and descriptive about things that really aren’t important to the story being told. It was personally hard for me to connect with Daunis. I have very little in common with her and sometimes it was hard for me to understand her reasoning. For those two reasons, I did take one star off. BUT I still recommend giving this one a read!

This book requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief to get into, but I definitely think it's worth doing so to get to the end and to hear the messages the book is saying. I loved following our Indigenous American protagonist, Daunis, and her connection to her land, tribe and community. There were also some great discussions about (sexual) violence on Native women, drug issues, and the impact of law enforcement on Native communities. The only true negative I had was that I didn't particularly like the way Daunis's body was talked about through the first half of the book. Otherwise, I'm really looking forward to reading Warrior Girl Unearthed now and I'm so glad I made the impulse decision to read this first.
