4.23 AVERAGE

I hate that my rating is so low because I agree with pretty much everything this author stands for. This book covers tons of important topics such as gender equality, America's issue with over-medicating and how to deal with grief just to name a few.

Unfortunately most of this is undermined by her execution. The best way I can describe her writing style is "quirky millennial." Which was jarring throughout the entire book, especially because this takes place in the 50s? I was constantly pulled out of the story because of this style. On top of that, the main character is off-putting - think a feminist Jimmy Neutron. Always the smartest in the room and refers to simple household goods by their chemical composition to average people (which I'm pretty sure is an exact plot point in Jimmy Neutron). Her daughter (and dog for some reason...?) are also always vastly more intelligent than adult humans. I feel like this annoying style really devalued the author's overall message and just did not work for me.

This book blew me away! It was so inspiring how firmly Elizabeth held her ground in a society that was very anti woman in a time when everything about her went against what was socially acceptable. I was so heartbroken by how the men in her life who had any authority over her as a student or employee were so grossly inappropriate and downright violent towards her for simply telling the truth. Yet she continued forth pursuing her research and sticking up for herself. Although she faces so many horrors, I love how things turn out for her.
I found myself hating Ms Frasc so much throughout the book, and she only slightly redeemed herself by the end. Still, it was really unnecessary how much of a mean girl she was towards Elizabeth.

Audiobook
I absolutely LOVED this book! I loved that Elizabeth was such a strong, smart woman. It really made me think about what it would have been like to be a smart, ambitious woman in a time when women were seen as inferior. I especially loved their dog and her daughter. I teared up multiple times throughout the story. Highly recommend!
