This book blew me away! It was so inspiring how firmly Elizabeth held her ground in a society that was very anti woman in a time when everything about her went against what was socially acceptable. I was so heartbroken by how the men in her life who had any authority over her as a student or employee were so grossly inappropriate and downright violent towards her for simply telling the truth. Yet she continued forth pursuing her research and sticking up for herself. Although she faces so many horrors, I love how things turn out for her. I found myself hating Ms Frasc so much throughout the book, and she only slightly redeemed herself by the end. Still, it was really unnecessary how much of a mean girl she was towards Elizabeth.

I absolutely LOVED this book! I loved that Elizabeth was such a strong, smart woman. It really made me think about what it would have been like to be a smart, ambitious woman in a time when women were seen as inferior. I especially loved their dog and her daughter. I teared up multiple times throughout the story. Highly recommend!

As a woman in science, this book gave me all the feels. Although this story is about a fictitious person, everything she endured, and the way things were, is true. Being in a male-dominated field, even 70 years later, I know that we still have strides to make towards equality with men, but I am so grateful for all the women before me that fought to get us where we are at. This book makes me appreciate those unsung heroes so much more.
Even though I read [b:Lessons in Chemistry|58065033|Lessons in Chemistry|Bonnie Garmus|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634748496l/58065033._SY75_.jpg|90356333] by [a:Bonnie Garmus|21370624|Bonnie Garmus|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1634023482p2/21370624.jpg] almost a year ago, it still blows my mind that this is a debut. There aren't that many books where the story really sticks with me, but I can tell you that this is one of them. I was very appreciative that there was some great humor mixed in because Garmus really tackles what life was like for a woman in the 1960s, especially if you were a woman that wanted to do more with her life than just be a homemaker. Elizabeth really gets put through the wringer in this book and there were some parts that were extremely hard to read. And despite what some people might think, this isn't a romance at all, and while it does have a dash of romance thanks to Elizabeth and Calvin, this is a really small part of the larger story.
The audiobook was an absolute dream to listen to and I thought the narrator Miranda Raison brought so much to both the story and the characters that I couldn’t even imagine anyone else reading this book. The audio also happens to include an interview with Bonnie Garmus that is conducted by Pandora Sykes, so I would recommend it even based on that alone. It is some great bonus content that the book doesn’t include, and I enjoyed getting to hear Garmus talk. Lessons in Chemistry made me bawl like a baby and was an extremely emotional read. I was more satisfied with the end than I expected to be, and every single tear I shed during this book was completely worth it. If you enjoy feminist reads, historical fiction, and strong female characters this needs to be a must-read for you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
