A new world. A new magic system. I enjoyed it. The cover is to die for. I feel like the characters could’ve been a little more fleshed out.

I just couldn’t get into it. The writing is good, but the characters are lacking in depth and intrigue.

I loooooved the West African inspired world building in this, such a breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre where so many novels are rooted in precolonial/medieval Europe. However, the characters felt very flat to me - I wasn't able to connect or care about them much, and there were even some character deaths that I'm sure were meant to be heartbreaking but just... didn't affect me? The writing was overall pretty well done but leaned a little too much into Brandon-Sanderson-style lack of subtlety. Which, as we know, I am not a massive fan of. Overall very solid though, will likely be picking up the sequel when it is released.
