One of the best books I've ever read. Truly, Michael McDowell writes the finest southern gothic horror ever.

Does anybody else find that it is much easier to review books that you don't like, as compared to those that you can't even pick one thing to complain about?! That's why I'm finding so much difficulty in writing down my thoughts for Blackwater.

I didn't just read Blackwater. I felt like I was immersed in this saga; felt like I was living in the small town of Perdido, and seeing life through the eyes of the Caskeys and the Sapps. Every single character was nuanced, complex, and intensely interesting. Especially the female characters. Elinor Caskey is one motherfucking badass monster lady.

I listened to this as an audio book, and I was a little intimidated by the 30 hours of listening time.

I shouldn’t have been.

The story moves fast, it’s engaging, and it’s well performed (should you choose to listen). I really enjoyed the book, and I highly recommend it.

How am I supposed to go on with my live when I've just finished this serie ?? It's a real interrogation I have ! I read the whole collection all together so it really felt that the Caskey's adventure were the common thread of my life for some time.

I was absolutely HOOKED right in the first pages. The mysterious atmosphere was sooooo well done and I always wanted to know more and more about what was going on. After reading the prologue, I even paused reading because I was afraid the main body would not hold up to the standard of that beginning. Well let me tell you that I wasn't disapointed !

This serie was so good ! It was amazed by the evolution of characters and how they became entirely different persons in front of my own eyes, yet everything made sense. The author absolutely manipulated me and changed my mind about characters as he sees fit. Amazing.

The only thing regarding aging characters is that sometimes I found the children discourses and ideas were not really on point regarding their young age, but hey.

I absolutely adored the first three books, I had a hard time going through the fourth, and then the last ones were good but not as good as the first ones. I prefered the time when there was more conflict inside the family (let's be honest, we're talking about the hatred between Mary-Love and Elinor) as well as when they were not as rich as in the end.

But overall, I really read all the books as the whole, and as a whole, I loved this serie !

I liked the concept, but this book was about 90% mundane. I believe the author could have easily told the story just as well in about half the time. The mix of river monsters and malevolent ghosts also seemed a bit odd to me, but not a deal breaker. The reader was excellent.
