I read The Water Dragon’s Bride and liked it. Rei Toma is a good writer and artist. This story is good so far.

It’s weird. The author said this is set in the same universe as Dawn Of The Arcana, but The Beast’s King feels rushed. Am I supposed to read Dawn of the Arcana to understand what’s going on in the world or did the author just do a very poor job at it?

All I know is there’s humans and beast people. For some reason humans control everything and beast people are slaves. But why? How did the humans become all powerful when beast people have superpowers, or at least some of them do. Why do they just go along with it? Does it really matter? Probably not, but your universe doesn’t make sense.

And because of not understanding the setting of the story everything else just seems pointless. I could care less the the main characters motivation. But why does she need to pretend to be a guy? I’m not sure it’s worth reading more just to find out why she needs to be a guy to avenge her brother.

Thank you to VIZ Media for the e-ARC!

This is only the beginning of the story but I’m very intrigued. The art is beautiful and the characters, while certainly falling into tropes, have definite potential. Honestly, I have no problems reading the same tropes over and over as long as it’s also interesting and while this one may not appeal to people who might have read a wider range of fantasy manga (or it might! We’re only on the first one after all and who knows what comes next) and want something brand new, this will probably still easily find its audience. I look forward to reading the rest!

I love the art style, especially the character design of Rangetsu.
I didn't know that this series was connected to a different series written by the same author.
So there were some connections/mentions to it. I don't know how much this affects the story if it helps if you have read the other series. But for a first volume I really liked it. It gave some background info on the world and the characters and what they're motivations are.
But for me the bond between the prince and Rangetsu I just felt it was weird that in the first volume they would randomly announce what they're intentions were to this guy they literally tried to kill a couple pages ago.
But overall very enjoyable and definitely want to continue the series.

Rei Toma consistently delivers amazing stories and art. I'm a fan girl and I can tell I'll be obsessed with this series. Oh I also loved the little bonus Water Dragon Bride story at then end !

5 quests for vengeance out of 5 girls pretending to be boys omg I love that trope so much
