Can we just start with saying that I have never been much of a sci-fi fan and then come to the immediate conclusion that LIFEL1K3 is now the reason I might actually consider having metal/cybernetic body parts in the future. I have to admit that I was very weary going into this as I was worried that I might not have the attention span to keep with it or the brain power to process all the technicalities, names, and slang. And whaddayaknow? I was able to prove myself wrong, or maybe Jay is just that great of an author that his writing just has that effect. Besides all that, I have about a billion reasons why I loved this book to pieces.

Eve is introduced as a seventeen-year-old tough-nut teenager with a ridiculously good looking fauxhawk and a ton of skill for building machines to fight in the WarDome where she earns credits to buy her grandpa medication. Most of her time is spent ripping up machines there or avoiding a gang amongst the scap with her best friend, Lemon Fresh, her logika pal, Cricket, and her cyborg dog called Kaiser. The setting is post-apocalyptic Kalifornya, now known as an island called Dregs. We begin to realise that there is more to Eve's past than she had anticipated when a lifelike called Ezekiel shows up almost completely trashed in the scraps and claims to know her as someone else. When the brotherhood show up at Eve's doorstep where her grandpa lives to eradicate her after somehow destroying a gladiator robot in the WarDome with her mind, Eve and Ezekiel have to quickly work together to shut them all down. Until another lifelike shows up and everything goes to hell, along with Eve's perception of who she really is.

Incredible story. Loved the characters and their arcs. Goosebumps reading the Coda also.

Throughout the whole book, you were positioned to think a certain way about the heros and villains but then BAM PLOT TWIST EVERYTHING IS FLIPPED ON ITS HEAD!

The story was amazing and kept me on the edge of my seat. The writing, however, left much to be desired. The language is too flowery and overused, which took away some of my enjoyment. This may work for some, but for me I found it hard to follow. I will be anxiously awaiting book 2 but only to answer all of the lingering questions book 1 left me with!

3,5 ⭐

I originally thought this wouldn’t be my kind of book but I thought the same thing about the Illuminae Files and ended up loving it to bits so thought I’d give Lifel1k3 a go. And of course I ended up loving it to bits too.

The characters, the friendships, the crazy scary world and all the twists and turns were incredible. I feel like I was involved in such an epic, unique journey and really loved every minute of it. I found myself, when not reading, getting really excited about something and I couldn’t figure out why until I realised I was looking forward to what was happening in the book

Mad Max meets Terminator. Riveting and full of action story..

Great great build up and some unexpected reveals at the end. Hated (in the good way) the ending. Hoped for a happy ending, but post-apocalyptic real lives rarely get those

This book really wasn't for me. Which is surprising because I've loved everything else I've read by Jay Kristoff. I think I went into this thinking the wrong thing, which was my own fault so I wasn't prepared for what I was given which made it hard to enjoy. So no stars because it was still written well and in depth but I just did not enjoy.

First of all, the language. I really shouldn't be surprised with Jay Kristoff books at this point having fully fleshed slang terms and what not but this was DENSE with it. I had no idea what was going on at the beginning of the book because there were so many of the terms being thrown around. While I did grow to appreciate them as the novel went on and I grew use to what they meant, that doesn't take away form how difficult it was at the start. But then again, it just shows how fully realized this world is. So it's a good and bad thing I guess?

Second, the characters. Honestly I didn't like much of anyone. Except the Preacher. And Kaiser. That preacher had a job to do and gosh darn it he was GOOD at doing his job. I'd read a whole book just about the Preacher going after different bounties. When he was in the story was my favorite parts. Kaiser is a good boy who deserves all the belly rubs in the world.
Eve was alright. I mean there wasn't really anything wrong with her? But I never connected to her at all. Everything felt so surface level or rushed, especially the further along in the book it got. It was all very meh.
Ezekiel was about the same. Like he didn't really have much of a personality??? Other than being all about Eve??? So.... yea.
Lemon Fresh was also very one dimensional. She was just constantly all bright and sassy and nothing really more than that which wasn't really entertaining to read. She was just kind of there.
Cricket was alright but was far too repetitive. I like to follow a common rule of three. You can make the joke three times and then after that it's over done. Like hoooooowwwww many times was Cricket going to say "Don't call me little" or the whole exchange about the "metal man parts" followed by "You don't have any, Cricket." I swear it happened far more than should be allowed and was hardly funny the first part.

The romance... I hate insta love. Can't stand it. It's unrealistic and bleh. Which is what this was. I mean it wasn't the worst instalove I've read but I couldn't invest myself, especially with how obsessed with Eve Ezekiel was. And I mean, I kinda get it considering the ending... like where Jay was going with all this bust still.

Let's talk about that ending shall we? In the most non-spoilery way I can? I'm furious. I haven't been that mad at an ending in a loooooong time. Like I get it. I get why. (I don't accept why but I suppose I get it) But I'm full blown angry at it. Thus why this review is getting written at 2 a.m. because I'm too cranky to sleep until I get this out. But like.... WHY.

description

This is all really negative so what I will compliment was the fantastic writing and action of this story. It's clear what a good writer Jay is. The action sequences were incredible (once again especially with the Preacher involved). The story flowed really well and I can't find really any faults with that.

I was just sooooooooooo bored despite all of the great action and world building because I wasn't connected to the characters at allllllllll. But I can't deny that the book wasn't bad. I just didn't like it. And that ending made me so mad I don't think I'm even going to attempt to read the second one. Because I'm not going to be able to handle my fury throughout that book at the fallout of this one.

But if you're looking to read it, give it a try. It just really really wasn't for me.

Rating 3.5 stars

This book was kinda of a let down for me. I expected so much more from it after reading Aurora Rising by Jay a couple months ago. I however didn't like the character's so much in this book as I did with Aurora Rising. The characters in this book are all thrown together and I feel like we don't know a whole lot about them until way later in the book. There's some thing in the book that don't add up that I can't really explain it here without spoiling the whole book so if you have already read this book and are wanting to check out what things I found that didn't add up check out my review of the arc of Dev1at3 I got from Netgalley. My review for it will be up soon! The only things I did like about the character's were their humor. I think without that I wouldn't have been able to finish the book. It was hard to connect to the characters and I honestly don't know why I didn't feel more for them. Eve just seemed so flat. Lemon was a more developed character and I found that I liked her a bit more. My favorite character is Cricket a tiny little helper robot who Eve's grandfather created to protect her. He's a little spunky character and my absolute favorite in this book.

Plot wise I didn't see that plot twist at the end but the way the book ended didn't feel right to me. It felt forced. It was a cliff hanger but not one that made me want to read more. If that makes any sense at all. I think it was the shock from the plot twist that I just couldn't grasp what happened. This book is full of robots, adventure across the dessert and people that are wanting Eve dead because of these powers people believe her to have. I wish we would get to know a little more about the world. The world is in the state but we never know what happened just that there was a bunch of wars. I wanna know more about the history of this world.

Overall I wasn't a huge fan of the book but I didn't mind it. I hope to read all the books in the series because I love Jay Kristoff's dark humor and who knows maybe I'll love the series at the end?

I powered through Lifel1k3 fairly quickly as the story was quite engaging. However there were also some parts that I skimmed through as I wanted to find out answers more than I was enjoying the ride. So my rating is three stars, but I might upgrade later. I did like the world Kristoff created though the language did take some time to grow on me. The suspense was well done and the moments of sadness were pretty awful. I was a bit surprised by Eve’s decision in the final chapter/coda; it felt like she made it quickly. But then maybe that makes sense given the circumstances. Anyway, I’ll probably check out the rest of the series, but there are other works by this author that I liked more.
