I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review. This book was a fast paced thrill ride from start to finish
We meet Eve who lives with her Grandpa Silas and is fighting machina to try to raise money for his medicine. The world is a wasteland full of radiation and trash so there are scavengers who fight each other for anything worth money. Lemon Fresh is Eves best friend and gets pulled along for the ride. One day during one of Eves fights something unexpected happens and the brotherhood comes to kill her. The story was full of twists and turns and I didn't see the ending.

Well this was disappointing. I guess my expectations were too high cause I expected Illuminae brilliance. But this wasnt. I didnt understand all the tech and I felt like the world wasnt properly introduced and I didnt get it. Which made it quite exhausting to read. I also didnt really fall in love with the characters either. And the plot was okay. im a bit disappointed acutally :(
adventurous emotional lighthearted tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Edit: My second read was more fun.

I am changing my rating from 3 to 4. However, what I said in my last review still stands true. I still think it's the weakest Jay Kristof book. But the plot is unique and writing is great asual. It deserve more love. Read it guys! 😊

A love child of illuminae files and nevernight.

This was probably the weakest Jay Kristoff book I have read. It was by no means a bad book, It just wasn't as great as Nevernight and Illuminae Files. Despite Jay Kristoff's unique writing style and his signature shock elements, this felt a little too underbaked and hastly written. However, it was pretty fast paced with ample amount of plot twists, that we have grown to expect from Jay Kristoff, and was extremely hard to put down. I didn't feel bored at any point. It was entertaining and there wasn't a single dull moment (except for the cringy romance, of course.) Ending didn't disappoint either, it ended in the same Jay Kristoff fashion with not just one but dozens of cliffhangers and left me craving for the next book. However, i am afraid by the time the second book comes out, I will have already forgotten about this book as I wasn't too invested in story or the characters. This would have been better as a standalone novel, in my opnion.

I am more excited for the third book in the nevernight chronicles.

Honestly, I was so so impressed with the book by the time I finished it. Picking it up at YALC in London and starting it on the train home fucked up my entire to-read schedule, and after getting hooked on it I just had to put everything else aside and carry on until the end. Took me a few more days than I wanted, but here we are. And it was great.

It's not my genre of preference, but I had a really good time reading it. The latter half of the story gave me really strong Horizon: Zero Dawn vibes (the whole scene with the access code, if you get me) and I ADORED that game, so something cool must have resonated with me here. Eve is a fantastic heroine. Even though I was turned off by the kind of 'past' sections that related to her
Spoilerthe white laboratory perfect utopian future hospital science vibe is not my thing at all, just personal preference
, her present was very engaging. I would have liked it if more... stuff... happened in the story. There weren't that many main events, and I'm so so very eager and hungry to hear about the state of the rest of the world rather than just a small western portion of the USA, so I hope they come later in the series.

That was my favourite thing about the series - Kristoff is a fantastically vivid writer, and the world he designed on the pages was convincing and magical. The description of not only the settings, but also how he paced fast-moving car chases and fight scenes was stunning, and some of the best I've read in a while. I really hope he can keep up this quality for future books in the series. It's a shame that the villains weren't quite convincing enough for me to have it balance that out. I hope to hear more from them in the future.

Also,
Spoiler now that Ana is revealed to be alive, does this mean that Ezekiel can just go back to her and Eve and Lem can be lesbians??? PLEASE??? Can I get some Lesbians Mr Kristoff!!!!

All in all I'm excited for part 2, okay?

3.5 Stars

Just when I thought I knew who my favourite author was, another one of my favourites steals the show.
I love the way Jay Kristoff writes. This feels so different in comparison to Nevernight (one of my all time favourite series) but I can still feel that witty, hilarious side that I love about Jay Kristoff’s writing.

The twists and turns in this are insane. I guessed two of them but there were at least four or five in total. And that ENDING! Oh how am I supposed to wait a few weeks to read the next one?? It ended in a way that I honestly have no idea what’ll happen next. Like WOW that was an incredibly well done twist.

Gosh this was a fun sci-fi read. I can’t wait to read the next one.

I didn't love this one. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it. It felt like there was so much action that there was no room for the plot to develop. Except there were these sort of confusing flashbacks and then the last few minutes of the book dumped a bunch of stuff on you. Didn't really feel connected to any of the characters. Not gonna do book 2.
