You know when you finish a book and think...’it was good but something was missing.’ Lifelike is NOT that book. This book is stuffed full with butt-kicking characters, vivid action, and a devilishly clever plot.

By far my favorite book I’ve read this year. Prbly my favorite YA sci-fi/dystopia book I’ve read in a long, long time.

It’s so incredibly good - where do I start? The story is cool: it’s a mix of iRobot, Mad Max & idk something entirely unique. It moves along quick (I’m so tired of snail-paced books). I crave action & this book packs in a lot. But it doesn’t lack character or story development. I find most books have to sacrifice one or the other: action with little character development or slow with lots of development.

Eve, Lemon, Cricket, and Ezekiel. A main character like Eve is hard to find. She’s not the ‘woo is me’ kind. She throws a few pity parties for herself but she actually stops & thinks about the other persons/robots perspective, then picks herself up to fight again. Lemon & Cricket the snarky & sassy side-kicks. And Zeke *swoon*. A fiercely loyal partner and an equally fierce kill-bot. This the post-apocalyptic, robot fighting crew I’ll be reading again and again.

3.5/5
PLOT TWIST there at the end. Kind of long but I did like the writing style and the metaphors. Had some thoughtful commentary about machinery. I liked Lemon and Cricket, but the romance was boring. The technology and world were interesting to read about, and I'll read more of the series.

WHAT IN THE FREAKING WORLD JUST HAPPENED.

3.5/5 stars I guess
I liked the concept and a couple of the plot twists were good but I wasn't really invested in the characters or the story. Maybe it was the audiobook or the writing style, but I didn't really connect with the characters or care that much about what happened to them. I was intrigued and wanted to know how it ended, but it didn't wow me or make me feel strongly in anyway. I'm not really sure why. I'm a bit disappointed since I'd seen a couple of 5 star reviews and hoped I'd love it too. I don't know if I'll carry on with the series.

This book shocked me. Dystopian is not really my genre, I dig the Handmaid's tale and that is about it. But I loved this book. This was Mad Max meets Lord of the Flies meets the Terminator. I loved all the characters, I loved the grit and blood and just how insane and emotional this ride was. I picked up the second book right away. Mad kudos to Jay.

Initial Impressions 12/3/19: I picked up LIFEL1K3 to re-read before DEVIATE (ugh I don't know the numbers so I'm not gonna try) aaaand it's a good thing I did because I don't think I ever finished? I was tallying up my 2018 reads last year and noticed that LIFEL1K3 was missing from my read books even though I had read it so I set an arbitrary date about when I thought I finished it. When I started my re-read, I think I may not have actually finished the book, however that's possible! I must have gotten interrupted or something but who knows at this point. Anyway, my re-read turned into a half re-read, half finishing the book haha!

This is the third Jay Kristoff series I've read after the Illuminae Files and the Nevernight Chronicle. It definitely has that Jay Kristoff feel but I feel like it's a lot more aged down to fit YA and I guess I'm just not that into it anymore. It's hard when DARKDAWN memories are so fresh to feel such a tone change to a younger audience and I just feel it a lot more than with the other two Jay Kristoff series I've read. The characters are just much more immature, which makes sense and is appropriate on many levels for the book but it just wasn't as enjoyable to read. The characters are young, yes, but the Lifelikes are also incredibly emotionally immature (being two years old in teenager mode) so especially that immaturity level is just kind of bothersome to me.

I did end up rating the book four stars because Jay swooped in with some great twists that I somehow didn't see coming and I liked that he doesn't hold out making readers wait forever to get any answers in the book. There's a lot revealed as the book progresses and while some big show-stoppers are held for the end, there's also a lot that readers get to enjoy as they journey along.

The character relationships were really hit-or-miss for me. The romance was super meh but I loved the friendship between Eve and Lemon Fresh and the relationship the two girls have with Eve's grandfather.

I wasn't SUPER excited to start DEVIATE but I know I'll finish the series, whenever that happens to be.

If Mad Max Fury Road, Bladerunner, and Pacific Rim had a literary love child, this would be it. Fast-paced chases across a glass wasteland, Big Stompy Robots, murderbot replicas... this book has it all. I was all in.

Kristioff writes great dialogue and fun characters. He tackles deep issues in a way that’s not preachy or throwaway. There’s more beneath the surface if you want to find it. If not, it’s a great romp through the apocalypse. It was a very enjoyable read with fun twists. Looking forward to the next one in the series!

I kind of struggled with this book in the beginning, because a lot was happening and I just didn't really get what was happening because new characters, the world and the drama were introduced and it was a bit too much. I think it was after about 100 pages that I really started to get into it and I really enjoyed it. The characters were very funny and felt authentic (especially Lem). One thing is that the whole Deviate thing got snowed under a little by everything else while it felt important and like a 'big' deal. I get why that's done, because of what is revealed in the end, but that's not a good thing, because that made it feel kinda forced. Nonetheless, I did enjoy this and will definitely continue the series.

This book started of as meh, but as the story progressed it got better and the last 50 pages of this book were an absolute rollercoaster to read.

I struggled in the beginning with all the book-specific language and it seemed very over the top, but after a while I got used to it. I also struggled in the beginning because there was quite some worldbuilding all at once.

Reason for the four stars, is the plot, and specifically the twists. I didn't see the ending coming at all and just couldn't stop reading. And while the book-specific slang annoyed be at some points, the descriptions of everything were very nicely done.

5 stars!

This book really blew me away! When I actually sat down to read this, I flew through it in only a couple of hours. I love the world that has been built and I love the characters. The plot is probably my favourite thing in this books, especially with how twisty it is! And that ending!!! I was so surprised to see it happening and I cannot wait to dive into the sequel!
