This is the most Jay book of all books. It's weird, it's wild, it's utterly insane. But it's so, SO fun. I mean, there's a character named Lemon Fresh and a robotic dog. Need I say more?
I need the second book like right now. This book was just incredible and the ending is just wow.
It took me a little while to get into this book, It was odd, it was action packed but also felt slow at the same time. Once I got to know all the characters I enjoyed it even more. It is a good introduction book to the series.
It also has lots of twists and turns, although I sort of saw them coming, but not exactly in the way I imagined. I loved the ending, the sequel will most likely be even better.

More like a 3.5.
The worldbuilding of this book is FABULOUS. Seriously, I could envision this world so clearly. Jay Kristoff has a gift of fantastic worldbuilding. But his characters fell flat for me. Ana/Eve was...boring? Ezekiel was...boring? Their insta-love was unbelieveable and dull. Lemon Fresh was everything though and she made the book more interesting for me. I think she had more chemistry with Ezekiel than Ana/Eve did. Also the 2 reveals at the end were pretty predictable (one of them I had known from the moment the character entered the scene). But the major plot twist I did not see coming. I'm not sure if I like it or not. I'd have to see what the second book in the series would be able. If it's more Lemon Fresh, then I am game.

Warning. Danger. This thing wasn’t human. It might look it, sound it, feel it. It might be as beautiful as all the stars in the sky. Problem was, the smog was usually too thick to see the stars anymore. And there was something wrong here.
I want to start off by saying this was one of my most anticipated releases of the Summer and was one of the books on my Summer Must-Reads post, and boy, it didn’t disappoint. I happen to find the subject of artificial intelligence very interesting, and so this book really piqued my interest from the moment I first heard the blurb. This was one big mix of bad ass, and I enjoyed this whole thrill ride from start to finish. The wait for the next book is going to be all kinds of excruciating.
This did start off a little slow for me, I’m not sure why, but after I got to part two I really started to blaze through it. It wasn’t because the start of the book was boring or anything, I think I started at a weird time and then you’re thrust into a world that is vastly different from ours and the slang and things make it hard to get sucked in until you figure a few things out. Once I did get accustomed to the ‘feel’ of the world, so to speak, it was full steam ahead from there.
There were a crazy amount of plot twists in this; imagine you read this whole book and you think you’re certain about some stuff and then all of a sudden it all gets turned upside down. Don’t let that scare you, though! It was such an absolute shock, but in such a good way! To me, nothing is better than a book that keeps well hidden secrets. One of my very favorite aspects of this book was the fact that I was kept guessing at every turn and was constantly surprised by new information.
I enjoyed all the characters in this, and if I’m being honest (which I always try to be when it comes to my reviews) I now have a total crush on a robot. Ezekiel was a dream boat, Lemon was hilarious, Eve was dynamic character and a great driving force for this book. The characters all played off one another perfectly and the over arching story unfolded in one perfectly paced journey. I only have one grievance with this book, and I can’t mention it here because spoilers, but damn you, Jay Kristoff.
Overall, this book was fantastic. It made me excited to read his other work, considering Nevernight has been on my TBR for over a year. I’m really looking forward to the next book and will be mentioning this to people asking for YA Fantasy recs.

It's finally happened... a Jay Kristoff book I didn't like and I'm truly devastated.
I loved the writing, the characters of Lemon and Cricket, and the concept, but the execution was... not good. I was bored for 95% of this book. I was tempted to DNF but I wanted to hold out hope this book would improve. Spoiler: it did not. No one is more devastated than I am about this.
While I won't be reading the second book or the third, I still love Jay Kristoff's writing and still count him as one of my favourite authors.

OK. I admit, I went into this one with a bit of a bad attitude. I think I rolled my eyes so much the first few chapters they almost fell out of my head. The Mad-Maxian, violence fueled narrative was a bit much. It felt like a a mash-up or Robert Rodriguez and Michael Bey, if they wrote YA novels. But then...I found myself swept up in the story, and really liking the characters, especially the secondaries, Cricket and Lemon. I did not love the God Creator/Angel/Garden of Eden allusions, they felt like too much, and I hated the slang. However, Kristoff got me with that ending. I did not see the story turning in that direction, and it gave it some new life for me. It seemed a little less stereotypical at that point, but it took so long to get there.
