I really enjoyed this - it had just enough Macbeth references to be satisfying for someone who knows the play, without completely losing someone who doesn’t. I love a female revenge plot and especially loved seeing it transferred to the YA setting du jour, private school. I appreciated that Capin really leaned into how unhinged Shakespeare plots often are.

Ok. Tiktok brought me to this one and I found the ARC cover they showed compelling. It could reflect the duality evident in society, where women want and are given more liberties, but they are always held to impossible standards.

The coven's characters were amazing. A tight-knit group of female friends who have gone through everything together and stand first and foremost for each other.
The rest of the characters I found to be lacking, kind of generalized versions of different cliches.

The instalove, or rather, insta-infatuation was way too fast, even for teenagers. Speaking of teenagers, they have some incredibly deep things happen to them and we are expected to accept these grown-up behaviours? Kind of unbelievable, would have accepted more of it if they had been university characters maybe? More young adult.

I found myself still invested (a little bit) in the story, even if it reminded me at all times of old tragedies (and then read it was meant to be a Macbeth retelling hehe) so I kept on reading till the end, which is open ended and leaves a strange taste behind, given last minute developments.

This one of these „it’s not a bad book, just not my cup of tea“ books. And I maybe should have read MacBeth first.
